5.0 out of 5 stars A complete one off., 9 Dec 2011
If you like short stories and you're not familiar with one of the acknowledged masters, buy this book and revel in his genius. Most short story writers focus on one particular moment or scene and from that scene the reader extrapolates a world.

Frank does it the other way around somehow. In a few pages he manages to cram in everything, a broad overview of Ireland, the priesthood, drinking culture, death, life, families and somehow from this tableau you can extrapolate moments of pure epiphany.

He's brilliant simply because nobody to my knowledge ever approached writing in this way before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvellous mind blowing stories, 9 Dec 2011
As good a collection of short stories as you are likely to read; probably better than anything you've just read - provided you weren't reading Flannery O'Connor.

American Gothic at its very best. 'Crossroad Blues' is a particular highlight.

Buy this dictionary. I got mine second hand (near as damn it new) for about £8. It's worth it at £35 but at £8 that's giving it away.

Every family should have an authoritative reference tome like this one in their house and there's something about Collins; they just come across as a little less stuffy than Oxford.

1.0 out of 5 stars Deeply unfunny, 15 Dec 2010
I thought this book would be witty and erudite but really it represents a base form of humour.

The authors paucity of generosity, and pettiness towards his fellow men shine through.

1.0 out of 5 stars Clichéd, poorly constructed rubbish, 14 Dec 2010
This review is from: Sandstealers (Paperback)
The novel features cardboard cut out characters, hammy dialogue and a plot that falls flat on itself. If you can get over the two dimensional characters and a predictable storyline what remains is fiction by numbers.

The political overtones are conservative and bullish, nothing is questioned. The novel contains no resonant details or particular insight.

There are novels out there that illuminate this kind of subject matter, but this isn't one of them.
