Quadrivium: Number Geometry Music Heaven
Quadrivium: Number Geometry Music Heaven
by Miranda Lundy
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £13.48

5.0 out of 5 stars A compilation of six exceptionally beautiful books, 23 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a compilation of six books in the Wooden Books series: Sacred Number, Sacred Geometry, Platonic and Archimedean Solids, Harmonograph, Elements of Music and A Little Book of Coincidence.
Although I already had two of those six as separate editions, I don't regret buying Quadrivium; it is still worth every penny, as anyone who ever held one of those fascinating and beautifully designed books in their hands will understand, or even merely looking at the title page will give you a pretty good idea of it. Unfortunately, the silver writing on the cover wears off quite easily, especially since I often have to carry this book with me, in order to show it to colleagues, friends and students, but I wouldn't let this affect my top rating. Definitely a marvellous, splendid book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book gives lots of inspiration, 23 April 2013

This review is from: Polyhedron Models (Paperback)
At first glance I was a bit disappointed, because I expected nets ready to be copied and cut out (like in Gerald Jenkins' books for example), but then I discovered that this is not the approach here. As the book favours models out of different coloured card or paper, a single net wouldn't be of much use (or isn't even possible as in the case of many star polyhedra with lots of overlap when unfolded into 2D). Instead, it suffices to give the shape of each different face together with the vertex figure, and you can work out the rest yourself. So it saves you lots of very challenging calculations about the proportions and angles in polyhedra, while it leaves much of the practical intricacies to the reader, which is fine, because unless you are really passionate about creating these models, you should't try models as complicated as some of those featuring in this book anyway, and with some experience and lots of patience it can all be done.
For two months now I have been using almost every free hour creating some of the models described in this book, expanding my already vast collection of polyhedra and not worrying about finding suitable presents for friends. I am looking forward to making more of the in years to come. A truly marvellous, inspiring book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise phenomenology of nature, 17 Jan. 2013

This is less of a treatise on geometry or physics as it focuses on the patterns that are not mathematically exact or perfectly symmetrical, but nonetheless universal, as each of them occurs on different scales and in different ways. Another beautiful and thought provoking book by "Wooden Books".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun, 14 Aug. 2011
When I first watched Creature Comforts on TV, I have to admit, I thought that there are actors speaking to parts. Now realizing that theses are REAL interviews and imagining who the speakers might be, makes the whole thing even funnier. Great stuff - and you get it for only a few quid.
