1.0 out of 5 stars Sorry but I hated it. I found it oppressive, 3 Aug. 2015
This review is from: Birdman [DVD] (DVD)
Sorry but I hated it. I found it oppressive, like having a sheet over my head and being unable to breathe. I still rate Michael Keaton as an actor
but I not disliked a film like this one for a long time.

Excellent. I was never really a Blur fan but this is a great, inspired album.

5.0 out of 5 stars There is no better film on road cycling, 21 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Hell On Wheels [DVD] (DVD)
No other film captures what the Tour de France is about and the hell that it is. It also touches on the minuteae of the travelling circus that is the Tour. I have watched it several times over winter especially and it sets you dreaming about the next TdF and also cycling up France's cols next summer. If you are own only one cycling film, this is the one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Their best?, 21 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I recall buying the vinyl version in the early 1980s and re-discovered this album in 2012. It is my favourite Oils album because it is more interesting and original than early efforts yet is not as over-produced as some of their later albums. Many of its themes are as relevant today: the relentless corporatisation of the nation; the overbearing right wing media - "out-talked by the mass media, to pay the bills it lies"; the powerful mining industry "where will we be when they leave us a quarry"; the poor deal the nation's indigenous people get; etc. Also, few Aussie bands have ever really articulated the psyche of white Australia like Midnight Oil, i.e. the banality of suburbia, the stifling political apathy, punters forlornly pinning all hopes on gambling, etc. The album title 'Place without a postcard' refers to the great Aussie dream of the isolated, undiscovered, undeveloped, perfect stretch of coastline - somewhere close to the heart but harder and harder to find today.

Stand out tracks are:
1. "Don't Wanna Be the One"
2. "Brave Faces"
4. "Someone Else to Blame"
5. "Basement Flat"
10. "If Ned Kelly Was King"
11. "Lucky Country"

There are a few weaker tracks to skip but it's a great album to play loud!

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy an original version, to acknowledge the 'lost' years of a great artist, 15 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Rodriguez is unique and his life story is an amazing one. Disappearing into obscurity for a long time, he never received the accolades that his contemporaries did - e.g. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, et al. At least not until he was rediscovered, and even today many have not heard of him. He is one of the greatest, and learning from the film about the type of person he is and how he lives his life only adds to his reputation. As for 'Searching for Sugarman' the album, when was the last time you bought an album with lyrics worth listening to that are political, thought provoking, emotional and more?

Buy an original version, for all the Rodriguez records never sold, concert halls never filled, etc. back in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, when he was denied the global recognition he has always richly deserved.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and overrated, 30 Jan. 2012
This review is from: Red Dog [DVD] (DVD)
Disappointing and overrated. I'm surprised that those before me have given this a score of 5.
For me the film fails due to the following:
- lack of originality and an over-reliance on sympathy for the dog
- human characters that one doesn't warm to
- the script is not witty, funny, clever or otherwise memorable
- the old Aussie film cultural cringe cliche of the American male lead - why?
- other cliches like the macho Aussie miner who secretly knits, and the 'eccentric Italian'
- it's not really a gentle, child-friendly family film either - like say, the last remake of 'Lassie', although apparently some child viewers have shed a tear or two for Red Dog
- the film offers no insight into or observation on Australia
- as far as I recall there's no Aborigine in the film
- while the film is set in the 1970s, it looks like it could have been produced in the 1970s as well
- all the above aside, just as an undemanding fun film, it simply doesn't deliver.

I like Aussie films and wanted to like this one, but apart from the cute dog it's pretty poor. In Sydney and Melbourne, their main daily broadsheet newspapers 'the Sydney Morning Herald' and 'The Age' published the same review of the film and a survey. 471 members of the public gave the film an average rating of 2 out of 5. Sorry, but for most people, it is not a '5'.
