The Cinema of the Dardenne Brothers: Responsible Realism (Directors' Cuts)
The Cinema of the Dardenne Brothers: Responsible Realism (Directors' Cuts)
by Philip Mosley
Edition: Paperback
Price: £17.50

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, 15 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very insightful study. The author is not only analysing the films that made the Dardenne brothers famous, but also viewed their hard-to-find (or nearly-impossible-to find) early works, like the video documentaries they made for a small regional broadcaster. Mosley already displayed his profound knowledge of Belgian cinema (and Belgian culture in general) in his book "Split Screen".

The quality of this dvd is lousy. It was not subtitled for this dvd: the dvd is just a scan of a subtitled film print.

4.0 out of 5 stars Where is "The Immortal Otis Redding"?, 29 Sept. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very nice box, but I cannot understand why the people who put it together, decided to include two live albums. Both are great, because Redding was a magnificent performer, but the "Live in Europe" (1967) CD is now available in a superior version ("Live in London & Paris", released in 2008). So I would have prefered this box to omit the "Live in Europe" CD, but include "The Immortal Otis Redding". It's a real shame that the box now only includes two of Redding's three posthumous studio albums. After all, "The Immortal Otis Redding" includes gems such as "I've Got Dreams to Remember" and "Hard to Handle".
All in all, this box still offers great value, but if you have purchased both "original album series" boxes, you still need to buy "The Immortal Otis Redding" and "King & Queen", Redding's duet album with Carla Thomas

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 14 Feb. 2013

Like many metal fans, I heard about this band because of Metallica. After reading the Metallica biography "Enter Night" (Mick Wall), I finally decided to buy this album. You can hear that this album was produced on a shoestring budget, but it sounds good. And more importantly: the songs are excellent. I was particulary impressed by "Sucking my love" (which Metallica covered in concert and during rehearsals, but never released) and by "Shoot out the Lights". The latter already indicates that the quality of the extra songs is also very, very good. (Except maybe for "Waiting too long", which is too poppy.) Anyway, I definitely recommend this reissue of a classic album (great liner notes, by the way).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great compilation, 16 Dec. 2010
This is indeed the best of Bill Withers, a fantastic singer song writer who was only 8 years (!) active in the music industry, but wrote timeless classics such as "Lovely Day", "Ain't no sunshine", "Lean on me", "Use me", "Just the two of us" (announced here as a 'duet' with Grover Washington Jr., who does not sing, but plays the sax) and "Grandma's Hands". Bill Withers was involved in the production of this compilation. It features an excellent selection of his work and sounds great. I also enjoyed the liner notes: a short essay by David Ritz and details on the musical personnel involved in each track. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars High quality for little money, 8 Sept. 2010
This double cd compiles four original Ray Charles albums that you can also buy separately: "Yes Indeed" (1958) and "Ray Charles at Newport" (1959) on disc 1, "What I'd say" (1959) and "The Genius of Ray Charles" (1959) on disc 2. These are indeed classic albums, fantastic stuff.
The booklet features a 6 page biography of Charles, but there are no real liner notes on the production history of those albums. (The original liner notes have neither been reproduced.) If you want that kind of background information, you have to buy each album individually (in the "Atlantic Masters" series). But the sound quality of this 2-disc set is just as good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than most tracks on Sunday at Devil Dirt, 8 Sept. 2010
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan were never good at evaluating their own work. These tracks are "leftovers" from the Sunday at Devil Dirt cd but they are so good that they were later added as bonus tracks to the regular version of the cd.
