This is an excellent book. Helen Rappaport has obviously done her homework and has thus provided us with a well written and accurate account of Tsar Nicholas' II and his family's last few months in captivity.

The Tsar's shortcomings as ruler of the Russian Empire were undoubtedly down to his parents, especially his father's, view of him not being macho enough, and also the influence of his tutor, who, whilst being a very clever man, was very narrow-minded. Nicholas didn't want to be Tsar and he became so woefully unprepared. He was anti-Semitic, which is never a good thing, but this was learned from his elders, and was, unfortunately, rife in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. You can, therefore, understand why certain elements of Russian society would have been so anti-Tsarist. He also dispatched political and state enemies with a deft hand.

But did he and his family deserve to be so brutally murdered in the way they were? In doing so, the Bolsheviks made themselves no better than the Monarch they had ousted - history has taught us how the Bolsheviks and Communists have dealt with anyone who didn't toe the line.

This is an excellent book for anybody who is interested in the Romanovs, and I highly recommend it.

I had heard of Babi Yar, and of the massacre of Jews that took place there, but didn't know the details of this heinous crime of the Holocaust, and of the subsequent cover-up attempts of the Nazi's two years later. It makes for difficult reading, especially as the book progresses. We owe Ziama a debt of gratitude that this awful crime that took place in Kiev was documented. The world needs to know.

I went on YouTube to see if there were any clips relating to Babi Yar - there are a few, mainly composed of still photographs showing the women and children stripped not only of their clothing but also of their hope and dignity. But one thing struck me, and filled me with horror - several comments from viewers are deeply offensive and anti-semitic, and deny that this event ever happened "because no bones have ever been found"!!! They should all be forced to read this book!

....in the English language that could adequately describe the horrific, barbaric cruelty of Treblinka. Every one has heard of Auschwitz-Birkenau and the atrocities committed there, and of Bergen-Belsen. Treblinka was a killing factory, plain and simple, the ultimate murder machine of the Nazis. This book makes extremely difficult and harrowing reading, but it's contents needs to be known. We must never, ever forget the evil carried out by Hitler's henchmen, but more importantly we must NEVER forget those whose lives were cut so brutally short at this Hell on earth.

This must be the third time I've read Anne's diary, but the first time I've absorbed the enormity of it. It's hard to believe that she was only 13 when she started writing it as her writing style is so mature. She was so full of hope, she had such ambition, that it is heartbreaking to know that her life was over at just 15 years old, and then just a few weeks before Bergen-Belsen was liberated.

Every teenager should read this book, and every adult for that matter. I don't know what more I can say - I found it profoundly moving, and yet uplifting and funny in parts too. Thank you Anne, for putting your experiences and feelings down in writing, and thank you Otto for ensuring it was published for the world to read. God bless you both and your precious family, may you all rest in peace xx

CEZAR'S STORY: A Nazi Holocaust Survivor's Story
CEZAR'S STORY: A Nazi Holocaust Survivor's Story

Such a short book, but it still packs a punch. Cezar's concise recollections regarding the Nazi invasion of his home town to his incarceration at Auschwitz left me feeling so desperately sad and angry that people like him had to suffer such cruelty at the hands of sadistic madmen.

This book is completely different from most books written by Holocaust survivors - the majority had to suffer the appalling conditions, brutality and deprivations that came with living day-to-day in the Nazi concentration/death camps. Miklos Nyiszli, through a snap decision on the ramp, put himself into a situation that was, on the one hand, luxurious compared to his fellow prisoners, but harrowing nonetheless. He became Mengele's slave, charged with carrying out autopsies on this madman's victims, and all this carried out not only in the shadow of the gas chambers and crematoriums - the details of which lead to him having nightmares and insomnia - but also with the knowledge that, being part of the Sonderkommando, his life expectancy in this position was roughly three or four months. Some people, I'm sure, may ask the question "why offer yourself to do work for your Nazi oppressors?", but I would imagine that anybody who is facing extermination would try and buy time....time that may result in your life not being taken. Thank goodness he did survive, for without his expert knowledge and firsthand experience we would never have known the truth of what happened when those million or so poor souls walked down the steps into an underground room under the pretence of 'taking a shower'.

My Brother's Voice: How a Young Hungarian Boy Survived the Holocaust: A True Story

This book is a 'must read' for anyone who is interested in the Holocaust and the plight of the Jews in WW2. Pista Nasser was just 13 when his life was turned upside-down and he ended up firstly in Auschwitz where he immediately witnessed the barbaric brutality of the SS, and then within days he and his brother manage to leave there to another camp - Muhldorf. I'm not going to recount the dreadful conditions, the vicious punishments, the deprivation amongst the other horrors he suffered - I leave you to read those for yourselves. I don't think I've ever cried so much reading a book. But, his grit and determination pulled him through, he survived, miraculously, and managed to get home eventually. A remarkable story, written by a remarkable man.

This is a very concise memoir. The brutality, deprivation and barbaric cruelty that Icek Kuperberg witnessed and suffered himself hits you like a sledgehammer. How anyone survived the Holocaust is a miracle. May the survivors stories forever be told, because we must never, ever forget.

Thank goodness for books like this. Whilst the Jews ordeal during WW2 always makes for a harrowing read, their story needs to be constantly told. I find it amazing that so many young people today do not realise the enormity of the Nazis barbaric cruelty in those dark days. This book should be included in the History curriculum, as it's not as graphic as some Holocaust books I have read, but you still get a vivid picture of the terrible treatment, imprisonment and death of a group of people simply because of their race. I pray to God that the world never forgets.

I haven't read this since I was a child, but for some reason I felt the urge to download it and revisit it again.

What a wonderful, eloquent story. It's hard to believe that this was written in 1877 - some of the things mentioned could be relevant today, such as the traffic jams in London, and drunk 'drivers' causing death and mayhem.

I can recommend this book to anyone, young or old, who likes horses or, like me, just loves a really well-told story from a bygone era.
