5.0 out of 5 stars Epic account of an epic piece, 8 May 2011

Klemperer is completely masterful in this superb recording, which despite its age can stand comparison with the best of them. The soloists on the Karajan DG version may be even finer but the choral singing here is unsurpassed.
There have been a number of recent versions with cleaner, slimmer sounding forces (Gardiner, Herreweghe etc) but for sheer epic grandeur and splendour this is pretty unbeatable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ear-opening performance, 18 April 2011

I must agree with the other two reviewers of this wonderful recording. I own several versions of this superb work ranging from Klemperer and Karajan, via Richter, to Gardiner and Cleobury, but this version has a drama and immediacy all of its own. It's a revelation, and of course has the wonderful alto Marianne Beate Kielland whose sublime singing makes all the many alto arias a real joy. But, to be fair, all the singing, solo and chorus, is marvellous. Yet another recording of Bach's masterwork to be treasured.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic performance and recording, 24 Mar. 2011

This review is from: Bach-St Matthew Passion (Audio CD)
This recording captures a fairly early attempt at what might be described as historically informed performance. The HP movement has advanced so much that its aficionados would not think so, but for its day this was a groundbreaking performance, and it still packs a real punch. Of course Bach's music will always shine through any type of performance practice, from Klemperer and Karajan, via Gardener and Herreweghe, all superb in their own ways, to whatever the latest fad may be. The soloists here are wonderful, and it's especially a joy to hear the voice of Fischer-Dieskau in the arias, and the magnificent Evangelist of Haefliger. The chorus too, are a full-blooded bunch, dramatic when needed, or polished and hushed as required. The most wonderful three bars in all music, when the crowd realise that this truly was the Son of God, are possibly finer, certainly slower, here than in any other recording. For its day, the recorded sound is stunning, and everything can be heard with a clarity that contemporary engineers might envy. In sum, you should buy this, whatever other recording you own. You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good value Naxos release, 5 Nov. 2010
This review is from: Duparc - Songs (Audio CD)
This is a very fine record of the wonderful songs of Duparc, performed beautifully and idiomatically by two great musicians. Roger Vignoles is one of the world's greatest accompanists, and Paul Groves has a fluid, lyrical voice, well-suited to this repertoire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic value for a superb performance, 28 April 2006
This is one of the best performances of Cosi I have heard, and it's absolutely complete without any of the usual cuts. From a live perfomance recorded in 1992, it has a cast of young gifted singers who bring real acting skill as well as beautiful voices to bear on one of Mozart's greatest scores.

Buy it - you won't regret it.
