5.0 out of 5 stars Really good, 28 May 2012
This review is from: 50/50 [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
This isn't a film I was particularly expecting much from but it really is excellent. It's a really well plotted and thought out story. It's not too sentimental or preachy, the humour is funny and believable and the performances of the cast are great too. It's probably the best thing Seth Rogen has ever done. I wish there were more films like this being made, it's a real breath of fresh air.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it, 17 Feb. 2012

I seem to have been a bit late discovering Adele. I only recently bought this album but I can only echo the thoughts of most of the other reviewers here. All of the songs are excellent, not just the ones that were released as singles. Adele's voice is brilliant regardless of what type of song she is singing and the lyrics are always interesting. I hope she stays around for many years because she is a refreshing change to most of the chart music that is forced down our throats these days. This isn't throwaway pop, it's got legs and it will last for a very long time.

3.0 out of 5 stars King's Speech, 8 Dec. 2011
This review is from: The King's Speech [DVD] (DVD)
I enjoyed this film but I can't quite fathom how it won so many awards. It's a good story and rumbles along at a decent pace. It also has some great moments of dialogue but I was expecting something extremely moving with maybe a few surprises or some big reveal at the end. Unfortunately there is nothing unpredictable about it. I'm glad films like this get made but this one wasn't as great as I hoped.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hit and miss, 1 Aug. 2011
I was really looking forward to watching this film and it started off very well. The main story is handled really well and has some really great tension that keeps you gripped. However, all the parts set in Susie's heaven (although great to look at) are dull and add little to the story, in fact they tend to destroy all the tension that has been built up. What could have worked as a great crime thriller gets choked by the rambling afterlife moments. I also thought the ending was stupid. Admirable though it is to stick to the book, the ending just didn't work as well in the movie for me. It just left me annoyed whereas a more satisfying conclusion could have saved this film from being average. Definitely worth watching, but could have been so much better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unstoppable, 12 April 2011

Considering that it's just a film about a runaway train this is surprisingly good. It takes about half an hour to get going but once it's up and running this is a thrill a minute. What's particularly impressive is that there is no use of special effects. The stunts are all real and as one of the documentaries on the disc shows, the helicopters were literally flying just a few feet away from Denzel Washington's head! A good old fashioned action flick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 1 Jun. 2009
I'm not sure what made me decide to watch this show, because the premise of it doesn't sound that great. A washed up writer tries to sort his life out but generally fails at every turn. Doesn't sound that great does it? However, David Duchovny as Hank is absolutely excellent and the script absolutely crackles, it's so sharp.
This is very adult entertainment but it's extremely witty and clever. Much better than it sounds.

3.0 out of 5 stars The movie, 6 Dec. 2008
Sex and the City was a brilliant TV show. It was written for the small screen and to be honest it probably should have stayed there. I was really pleased that they made a movie because I missed the characters, but after having watched it, I'd rather they hadn't made it. It's not all bad. There are some funny moments but a film is a whole different story to a 45 minute episode. If this hadn't been made with the SATC characters it would have been a completely pointless film. With them in it, it has some entertainment value, but these aren't exactly the same characters that I grew to love in the show.

Life with My Sister Madonna
Life with My Sister Madonna

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, 9 Aug. 2008
This book by Madonna's brother isn't as you might fear (or hope) a character assassination of his sister. It's not a bitter expose either. I wouldn't be surprised if Madonna actually authorised this just to chuck some work Christopher's way.
The most enjoyable parts of it for me are in the details of how Madonna's career took off and how the dynamics of their brother/sister relationship were affected.
Chris Ciccone comes across as a pretty okay guy who hasn't blamed everything that didn't go his way on his sister. There's not much new to learn about Madonna but this is at least a book written by someone who really knows her. And it's an easy read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy, 28 May 2008
This is exactly what a kids book should be. My 4 year old son absolutely loves it. A rhyming book about pants and aliens, what's not to love? This shouldn't just be for kids! Great fun and very colourful pictures to accompany the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive collection, 28 May 2008

If you're a fan of Tina Turner and looking for a greatest hits album, this is the one to go for. There are a few other "hits" compilations but this is undoubtedly the most complete. It has all of the best stuff and a few live versions too. Most importantly for me it has the track "Proud Mary" from her time with Ike. An excellent compilation of hits from a star of genuine quality.
