5.0 out of 5 stars Don't forbid yourself a look at this - a real classic!, 14 Jun. 2015

This review is from: Forbidden Planet (DVD)
Fantastic film, though possibly a little dated now - it is nearly 60 years old! (2015) Having said that, the effects work still stands up remarkably well as does most of the acting - only the ship's cook is a little stereotypical and played for laughs. The main leads - Walter Pidgeon, Leslie 'Naked Gun' Neilsen and the beautiful Anne Francis - all acquit themselves admirably; there's even an appearance from Six Million Dollar Man's Oscar Goldman (Richard Anderson) as the radio operator! If you've never seen this, pull up the popcorn and a comfy seat and indulge yourself in Fifties sci-fi at its best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful children's series, 16 May 2014

Probably the best of the Doctor Who spin-offs with a consistently high standard of acting, writing and production over its five series. Only a shame that the late Elisabeth Sladen passed away when she did. Great for kids, great for big kids, sorry, adults too!

5.0 out of 5 stars When there was no tour, Kate's videos said it all - and still do!, 16 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Kate only did the one mini tour in 1979, and you can't help but think that she put all her creative energies that would've gone into staging future tours went into her videos. All are still as good as they were at the time they were released, with some big names - Donald Sutherland, Hugh Laurie, Dawn French - appearing too.

If you're a Kate fan, it's really a must!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series - glad Amazon have saved it from the TV scrapheap!, 28 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a quality show, with plenty of potential built in for series 3. Matthew MacFadyen and his co-stars are an excellent trio of actors who really give their all in this gritty historical-based crime drama, and with the changes from series 1 it has become slightly story-arc based. This isn't a bad thing, and it's easy for someone dipping in to catch up, compared to some arcs in other shows. If you're of a nervous disposition regarding blood and gore - although it's no horror movie! - you might want to steel yourself, but do give it a try. I would begin with series 1 though, to get the full benefit.

Once again, thank you Amazon for rescuing it from the scrapheap - I hear it will be on Instant Video first, then on BBC1 a few months later, but either way probably early 2015.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Cybermen return - finally!, 17 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Troughton's first run-in with the silver giants, all looking a lot better after their redesign after the clunky- but loved by me! - original shown in Hartnell's final story "The Tenth Planet". Although the story is one that would often be seen in Troughton's era, the "base under siege" plot, this is one is pretty well done, with lots of tension and good performances from all the regulars and guest performers alike. Troughton is starting to find his feet as the Doctor from here on in, and there is less flipancy or overt humour from him, but the imp is still there along with the mercurial quality and solid scientific background that made him one of, if not, the best (IMHO) of the original Doctors.

With the two missing episodes nicely animated to the original soundtracks, this story is a welcome addition to any Who fan's collection - or for the casual viewer that likes the old black and white dramas with good actors over the age of 21!

5.0 out of 5 stars The original super chopper - great film!, 17 Feb. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Blue Thunder [DVD] [1983] (DVD)
Although I also love the short-lived follow-up TV series starring James Farentino, the original film here starring the excellent Roy Schneider and Malcolm McDowell is far superior, a great plot looking at secret government plans to use the chopper for crowd control and worse while regular aero police officer Murphy (Schneider) tries to blow the whistle on it before he is blown out of the skies by McDowell. Some of the dialogue may be a little dated now, but do buy this, it's a great action film with wonderful performances from the two leading men.

It truly is a 'dip in and out of' book, showing the diversity of fan opinion from all walks of life, all ages and many countries. Covers pretty much everything you could want to find discussed in such a book - well worth getting!
