Too Many Compilations, 21 May 2002
Gary Numan was awesome when he came to the fore in 1979. Today his earlier work is being re-examined after the success of the Sugababes "Freak Like Me" track, which used the music from his first Number One, hit "Are Friends Electric?"
This album is a disappointment; there is little quality here to separate it from the other 20 odd compilation albums he has released. We have some NIN impersonations, and 2002 gives us an entire new instrumental track, which also sounds like NIN. There are 2002 "re-workings" of some of the classic tracks, yet they sound worse than the originals. What is the point in that?
I wish I had gone for the "Premier Hits" compilation instead, as this has the classic tracks, without the re-workings and the blatant NIN impersonations. Less is more is the lesson here.
