The Ultimate Collection [+Dvd]
The Ultimate Collection [+Dvd]

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice to have for Whitney fans..., 12 Sept. 2012
The DVD on this album is the genuine Ultimate Collection DVD. That means you get Whitney and Mariah (When You Believe); Exhale; Whitney and George Michael (If I told you that). Plus all the videos from the Greatest Hits DVD. So, yes it's very nice to have, but it looks like it has become rare and hence expensive.

I despair of the reviewers bemoaning the picture quality and even questioning why this was made!? Apart from her Greatest Hits DVD this is the most must-have item for a Whitney fan. Whitney is totally carried away with being in South Africa and gives an out of this world performance. She is also happy in her marriage, (though I dread to think what Bobby was up to while she was away). She is by no means in decline at this point, rather at the height of her powers!

This is the Whitney Houston Greatest Hits DVD, just released 7 years later under a different cover! It is a wonderful DVD and an absolute must-have for Whitney fans - but don't be like me and buy it twice!! My favourite bits are One Moment in Time at the 1989 Grammys, the All the Man That I Need video and the Run to You video. But it is all wonderful! Just don't buy the same thing twice!

This is a wonderful concert - Whitney comes across as the warm hearted person and big hearted singer that she was. Any true Whitney fan would not want to miss this out of their collection - she is wonderful in it - I agree with a previous reviewer that 'A Song for You' is pretty special!

The Small Woman: Gladys Aylward
The Small Woman: Gladys Aylward

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful read., 19 July 2011

This book was recommended to me by my mother! And I'm very glad that she did. It is a wonderful adventure book which will clearly mean more to someone with a religious (particularly a Christian) faith. It is unquestionably a must-read book - I have been so inspired that I have just ordered, but not yet received, 'Gladys Aylward: The Little Woman' by Gladys Aylward and 'A London Sparrow: Story of Gladys Aylward'. That mix of traditional Chinese culture, a remote mountain region and its inhabitants, a remarkably strong Christian faith - it is a potent mix for people who like that sort of thing, as I do. One of the famous scenes is where she is 'pushed' into the local prison to quell a riot! Glorious stuff - Daniel and the Lions' Den all over again! There is so much of this book that strikes a chord: the wonderful feeling of security in the extremely remote and self-sufficient moutain hamlets that are immune to any foreign invasion because they will never be discovered by the invader; the incredibly touching, total faith that children put in adults that they trust (and Christians put in the God that they trust). Not a long read, which is a plus for busy people - I loved it.

The Remains Of The Day [DVD] [2001]
The Remains Of The Day [DVD] [2001]

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine romance., 6 July 2011

I have just reviewed '84 Charing Cross Road' and I actually think 'Remains of the Day' far less sad. There is an absolutely classic, 'mind-boggling' scene in 'Remains' where you simply cannot believe the insensitivity of Hopkins' character (Stevens): Emma Thompson's character (Miss Kenton) is weeping as though her heart would break and he solemnly burbles on about a housekeeping matter! But there is not the feeling of emptiness and futility in 'Remains of the Day' that there is in '84 Charing Cross Road' - you feel that the characters in 'Remains' are actually living very much the lives they want to lead. The major characters all make choices and have to live with the consequences of those choices, but this is not a tragic film and that fact is epitomised by the rather exhilarating feeling of the bird (and the viewer) flying high into the sky at the end. I feel that if Stevens had had to choose between his job and Miss Kenton he would always have chosen the former and Miss Kenton, equally, has no doubt about the decision she finally makes. Parting is undoubtedly 'such sweet sorrow' in 'Remains of the Day' but, paradoxically, it is '84 Charing Cross Road' that eclipses both 'Remains of the Day' and the much earlier 'Brief Encounter' when it comes to expressing something of the melancholy and sadness that too often lies at the heart of the human condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classy, but sad., 6 July 2011

84 Charing Cross Road is a must-see, but it is very sad. I would not describe it as comedy at all. I understand it is based on a true story and it certainly feels as though it is. There are clear parallels with Remains of the Day, as Anthony Hopkins plays a reserved/repressed Englishman in love with 'a woman of a certain age' in both. This film is the opposite of escapism and leaves you feeling distinctly melancholy about the sadness that sometimes exists in everyday, ordinary lives. Anne Bancroft's character, in particular, seems very lonely with only her beloved books for company. The end of the film leaves you with a feeling of emptiness and regret at the missed opportunities of the characters. You feel that happiness was brought into peoples lives for a time but in the end it all came to nothing - you could almost see the film as a metaphor for the futility of life. A film like this makes us realise how accustomed we are to happy endings in films and how there aren't necessarily always happy endings in life! Very thought-provoking.

A Room With A View (Special Edition) [DVD]

5.0 out of 5 stars A sensual feast.., 5 July 2011

I am not immune to Helena B-C's charms in this film, which must be one of her early ones - she looks very beautiful playing Lucy Honeychurch in A Room with a View - with lots of attractive pouts! The scenery is also breathtaking, the music lovely - it is - as I have said, a sensual feast! It was made in the 80's and has a very 80's feel - a glorious abundance of everything! I also like the performance of the actress, whom I recognise but can't name, who plays Lucy Honeychurch's mother - she comes out with classics like 'Are they the right sort of people?' and is a very likeable character. Maggie Smith plays the irritating cousin who is indeed irritating and there is a very young looking Judy Dench which is intriguing. Perhaps not a must-see, but you certainly wouldn't regret watching it!

Howards End is a must see. Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson and Vanessa Redgrave, ably supported by Helena B-C are first-rate. I can't really choose between the three of them - they are clearly feeding off each other and have produced mind-bogglingly great perfomances - you haven't lived until you've seen Howards End! Ok I will choose - Vanessa Redgrave - what an extraordinary character she plays! When she says 'I'm only thankful that I haven't got the vote' (or words to that effect) it is a real scene stealer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Waterfront!, 5 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
'Streetcar Named Desire' is very interesting as it is set in such a different period to our own, but I am not a Tennessee Williams fan - I find his plays rather odd and this film is no exception. I actually think that Vivian Leigh steals the show, not Marlon Brando, (though I know the experts disagree)! I think that Marlon Brando is better in the two later films that he did win Oscars for, and also in Julius Caesar and probably even in Last Tango in Paris. For me this film is worth watching to see Vivian Leigh's performance and for that reason I would recommend it. It is perhaps unfair to compare it to 'On the Waterfront' as the two are from very different genres, but in my opinion Waterfront is a class above Streetcar.
