5.0 out of 5 stars A great movie, 13 May 2014

I wasn't sure what to expect after the first Hobbit film, but this makes up for all of it's predecessors failings! Epic special effects, some great fight scenes, and a dragon - what more can we want? After a prequel scene to set the plot for new viewers, the pace picks up steadily, but purists must beware, some of the scenes deviate from the original books, but in my opinion, actually add to the story. The inimitable Stephen Fry plays a suitably sleazy master of Laketown, and Benedict Cumberbatch gives a wonderfullly paranoid but violent 'voice' to Smaug. Looking forward to the final film with interest now.....

4.0 out of 5 stars Back on form!, 21 Nov 2013

I thought the last Dresden Novel was a little off form, but this is Harry, back from the dead, and straight into the action, now combined with new orders from Mab, adding an extra element of Chaos to Harry's world and as always, just a few hours to save the world - a good read..

3.0 out of 5 stars a fairly good read, 13 Jun 2013

Quite enjoyed this book, cracks along at a reasonable pace, but somehow never fully pulled me away from reality, which I like a good book to do. worth the price though, and an author to watch in the future...

2.0 out of 5 stars Sorry, not a fan..., 14 May 2013

This seems aimed firmly at the 'Bored of the Rings' class of reader. Cheap sexual innuendo, boob jokes and a fairly weak story line, I should have been warned by the title, a bit like a postcard-humour cross between 'Willow' and the 'Carry On' films. Maybe I am just not the target demographic, but this book is not for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Pratchett!, 14 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Aimed firmly at the younger readers, this is still a series that adults can enjoy. Three plots surrounding the same local gang of adolescent friends - firstly with a computer space invaders game that turns out to be real - secondly, the local cemetary comes to life to complain about local planning proposals - and finally a slip back to WWII to save the people from a bombing raid. All with Mr Pratchett's wry and cynical humour, hugely enjoyable. A definite 'keeper' for me!

2.0 out of 5 stars Anachronistic and clumsy., 14 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Drunken biker accidentally sent to a magic land and has to beat the baddies before getting home. A twist on an old plot, but the core of the story feels weak, or maybe I am too old to appreciate it. Lots of half-naked women, boob jokes and sexual innuendo, this feels more like the 60s films about saucy window cleaners. Will maybe find an audience (possibly what it was targeted at, to be fair) amongst those who enjoyed Bored of the Rings and Barry Trotter, but not for me, sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars light hearted supernatural crime thriller!, 14 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A refreshing change. Take what always seems to be a American style - wizards, magic, murder etc, that is usually portrayed with the written equivalent of a Hollywood SFX budget- sun and glamour, and put it into post economic boom London, with its rain, fog and unique ethnic and cultural mix. Centre the plot in a police dept nobody understands and wants, with a non-existent budget, a young PC who has just found out he can do magic, and an old (immortal) Chief Inspector. Like a mixture of the Sweeney, Lock Stock, and Shaun of the Dead. If you want classical literature or Lord of the Rings, look elsewhere. If you want a good simple murder plot with a smattering of magic, that will give a quintessential British urban feel and a grin, that will while away a few hours reading, get this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars does what it says...., 13 Mar 2012
Delivery time was as stated and when the safe arrived it was suprisingly sturdy. The Bank of England it is not, but for a simple home safe for valuables and keys, it does the job well. the electronic lock is easy to set up and functions well, although the handle seems flimsy, but put in the right place, the larger size makes this a useful and secure way of storing documents and small valuables, well worth the money...

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent cover for a good price., 7 Feb 2012
A good solid cover, stiff at first but softens with use. The clasp system specially for the Kindle is a vast improvement on the 'slip' design and does not interfere with the operation of the Kindle at all. Overall a very well-made and elegant design.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great end to the series!, 28 Dec 2011
What can be said? there can be few people alive that don't know the plot to the last film, so I ain't going to go through it here! Having said that, a brilliantly crafted film, with excellent CGI effects, the 3D particularly good in this (better than the previous film), which still work well on 3D TVs. Some alterations to the original book, but even the purists will struggle to say that they don't help keep the film moving on well, with only a couple of times where HP novices (are there any left?) would be confused without a background story. The only real criticism I have is that the final battle between Harry and Voldemort relies more on CGI than the verbal content originally provided by J.K.Rowling, which I think is a shame, as Harry's last speech in that duel sums up the underlying moral concept of the whole series. However, still a brilliant climax to a series of films that have raised the bar for filmmakers everywhere, who want to provide films that cross the age gap. well done to all involved.
