3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great, 27 Mar 2014

After reading Alex,I had great expectations from the author. This book did not grip me totally like Alex did and I kept losing my concentration while reading it which is always a sign that the novel is lacking something. Anyhow the ending was good and unexpected though sad for the main protagonist of the book and would explain why the book is called 'Irene'

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping a real page turner but very disturbing, 19 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Good topic but disgusting too. The characters are believable and the way the story progressed is flawless with enough of action to make it an interesting read. I hope that such a massive paedophile ring and the tortures that they put the children through is all the imagination of the author but somehow there must be some truth in this bad world that such ostracities actually occur to the innocent children of this world this book is not for the weak hearted

5.0 out of 5 stars So sad but good, 14 Mar 2014

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Even though the story in itself is hauntingly sad but it is written very well and the portrayal of the characters is excellent and the title of the book sums it up

1.0 out of 5 stars Killing Vera was not justified, 16 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It was an okay story but killing the dog Vera was not justified even as a mean to get or to finish the story. No dog lover is going to be happy with that ending. The author could have easily found a better alternative if Vera was killed by the murderer understandable but by her owner- deplorable

Ann Cleeves is a good crime novelist and as usual this book was well written and has a clever plot and I for one could not guess who the murderer was till the end.

This is definitely one of the best Ian Rankin's novels. bringing Rebus, Fox and Clark together is phenomenal. Hope to read more of them working together in the future. One of the best books I have read this year.

1.0 out of 5 stars Simone is not a character to like, 26 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Rendezvous (Kindle Edition)
The book is so so Don't understand what so great about this particular author it reads more like a mills n boons than a novel of a crime genre. Murder n mystery were not the flavour of the book but the romance or should I say the sex between the narrator n her toy boy. So on the whole a big disappointment.Simon is a selfish self effacing woman who I would have happily written off. Esther Verhoefs heroines are not very nice women with weak characters that I difficult to like let alone feel sorry for. So I definitely would not recommend this book Of course if u like sleazy sex scenes then go for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touchingly humane, 3 Nov 2013

It was slow in the beginning and it all sounded like the ramblings of a an old psychopathic woman. But as the story progressed, it got more interesting and by the time I finished the book I liked Madame Elsa Depreu and admired her strong though eccentric qualities
