4.0 out of 5 stars The love in her eyes, 3 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this DVD primarily to watch two of my favourite actors, Bradly Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. I was not disappointed. Their outstanding performances carry the film.
I love the way Jennifer Lawrence looks at her partner: it is a steady look, an earnest look that says:" Don't play games with me." She is for me the incarnation of the modern woman, a woman who knows that she possesses all the weapons of seduction, but refuses to flash them off just for the spectator's fun.
I found the script somewhat lopsided and spotty, neither entirely mental-health drama, nor romantic comedy, funny and heartbreaking at the same time. Many threads are interwoven here, but the constant joggling with potentially different stories does make the film event more surprising and watchable.
De Niro and Weaver derserve a mention for their remarkable supporting performances.

Holy Smoke/Hideous Kinky [DVD] [1999]

Everything flows, nothing stays unchanged. According to some famous old Greek philosophers at least.
I bought these 'old' DVDs to freeze the time, to remember the glorious few years during which Kate Winslet was a promising young actress, and not the superstar she has become.
I was not disappointed. She exhibits here all the qualities that made her a star: A fresh face, a body full of energy, a thirst for life and an irresistible natural impertinence that probably drew all men crazy. I could'nt quite fathom how the filmmaker came to this strange title 'Hideous kinky'. The script, somewhat screwed up, shows only an unhappy young mother trying to find her way in sunny Marocco, only to discover in the end that home is the best place. Nothing kinky about that story, only interesting views of 'normal' Maroccans living their 'picturesque'life without much ado. I love the landscapes though.
Jane Campion's 'Holy Smoke' is quite a different story, a rather dark psycho-drama with two very strong personalities getting relentlessly at each other, male ego colliding at full force with female ego. Thanks partly to her solid male counterpart, Harvey Keitel, Kate Winslet shows her quite astonishing dramatic qualities. She impersonates perfectly the duality inside the soul of a beautiful young woman who knows that she must hold to the truth, to 'her' truth, and the moments of reckoning when she realizes that her opponent might have some things right. The ending shows both fighters exhausted but somehow happy together. An allegory for the sex war and an outstanding actors performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars lie to me, 4 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Everybody lies in this powerful series: the husband to his wife, the parents to their children, the beautiful couple to its neighbourhood, etc.. The beauty of it is that it has hardly anything to do with the supercharged plot and its iconic family of spies posing as typical middle-class American family. Which means that you can enjoy the superb show without having to follow the intricate espionage story. The script has been so strongly textured that you can follow the twists and turns of a modern family's life and thereby forget that the beautiful couple is "not for real".
'The Americans' ranks easily among the best TV shows I have ever watched: remarkable psychological bent, strong writing, textured production values, outstanding acting and an unrelenting care for the details that make it perfectly realistic.
From what I hear, 'The Americans' is not a crowd-pleaser. Too bad. I only wish we had more psychological dramas on TV and less violence and gore.

20 Feet From Stardom [Blu-ray]
Dvd ~ Morgan Neville
Price: £8.76

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost famous, 8 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
We all know their voices, but hardly anyone knows their names. Morgan Neville thought it might be interesting to shine the spotpotlight on the untold true story of the backup singers, musical legends in their own right.
These gifted artists span a range of styles, genres and areas of popular music, but each of them has a fascinating story to share.

I love this film because of its rare archival footage, its impecable soundtrack, the spontaneity of the participants and the immediate contact with great stars of the pop music.

A triumphant and heartbreaking tribute !

4.0 out of 5 stars Lousiana swamps, 14 Oct. 2014

This review is from: The Paperboy [DVD] (DVD)
I liked this underrated movie because it is in fact an utterly ambitious work of art trying to show, despite a shoe-string budget, what damage could be done to human relationships by the prevailing culture of sexism and racism in the 1970's. I liked the star-studded cast with outstanding actors playing very convincingly "against type" in a real world made up of self-delusion an -destruction, where the best feelings and the best intents only bring death and sorrow in the end.
I found particularly interesting the relationship between Jack (Zac Efron) and the black family maid. We all feel that the tender complicity between both could lead at least to a solid friendship. But Jack's underlying racism prevents it from becoming real.
The Paperboy shows us the dark sides of humanity and does not provide any answers. But the characters are solid and realistic.
Great performance of Nicole Kidman as a deeply neurotic sex-obsessed woman and of Joan Cusak as a hapless convicted non-felon who looks with apparent indifference on the mess his life has become.

Up In The Air [Blu-ray] [2009]
Up In The Air [Blu-ray] [2009]

4.0 out of 5 stars Ten million miles later, 13 Oct. 2014

Jason Reitman of 'Juno' fame tells us about an executive who has set out to become a travel legend by rushing from airport to airport, firing people inbetween. How do you feel when you finally get the supreme reward, a medal for the 10th million miles traveled ?
Well, sort of queasy. What is the meaning of it all ?
George Clooney is here at his best. Seemingly never acting, just being himself. Master of his art. The most interesting character is undoubtedly Anna Kendrick who evolves from perky, know-it-all Natalie - a supporting role at best - to a lead actress in her own right.
I love her face, because it mirrors all sorts of emotions without even moving the lips. Anna Kendrick has a remarkable face and she definnitely knows how to use it.
Not a great movie, but very good entertainment.

Wedding Crashers [Blu-ray]
Wedding Crashers [Blu-ray]
Dvd ~ Owen Wilson
Price: £6.20

3.0 out of 5 stars Male chaivinism, 13 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
You will not live here an unforgettable movie experience, only a well crafted gaudy piece of entertainment leaning on two well-known professional actors. The script itself is flimsy and the jokes not really unexpected, but all in all you will spend a pleasant moment in company of these wedding crashers whose behavior reminds the one of not very mature teenagers.
I would recommend it if you definitely have a gap in your timetable to fill.

Pret-a-Porter [DVD] [1995]

You will meet a bunch of old friends in this classical Altman satire: Kim Basinger as an intrepid TV-anchor; Marcello Mastroiani as petty thief - Jean-Paul Gaultier as himself and Forest Whitaker as a media mogul, just to name a few. Sophia Lauren plays a sad widow who falls under the charm of her former lover. She manages to maintain poise, look stunning and put in a good comedic performance while wearing hugely oversize hats.
You will dive into a world of appearance and betrayal, where nobody cares about anything beyond his own success and good looks; where the spoken language - one of mankind's biggest conquest - is used only to hide one's true feeling.
It is a funny, witty and uncompromising universe, filled with gorgeous creatures like Julia Roberts or Lauren Bacall and cutting-edge dresses that look rather old-fashioned. But Altman's satire of the fashion world will never get out of style.

I chose this flick - what else - for its cover. Thought I might get some juicy girlie things. I was utterly disappointed. I could not find a movie in this inane and disparate collection of seemingly not interconnected shots. The story does'nt take off because there is no story. There is not a single erotic scene, because French directors do not know what erotic means.
It's flat, tepid, utterly devoid of the slightest hint to humor (you will hear occasionally some witty remarks, but wit does'nt make up for the lack of humor).
Belive me: the cover is the best thing about this cinematographic shipwreck. And guess what ?
You can get it for free !

Had the pleasure to meet with an exquisitely pretty womand and outstanding actess, RAchel McAdams, starring rather convincingly the lead in a nice suspense thriller from horror film director Wes Craven. Both lead actors, R.McAdams and Cillian Murphy are good and believable.
The plane boarding sequence is mesmerizing and the 30 minues on board excruciatingly claustrophobic. The end seemed a bit contrived but the first hour is pure delight.
You will buy/rent this flick if you want like me to know how Rachel McAdams came to a star status, which she deserves by all means.
