Diary of a Meningioma: A Patient's Perspective
Diary of a Meningioma: A Patient's Perspective
Price: £2.94

5.0 out of 5 stars poignant and informative, 22 Oct. 2014
A very readable, no-nonsense but still heartfelt account of one man's journey through the medical system after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

The book is as informative as it is interesting, because the author weaves his own experiences in with medical facts and studies, and so provides both a human and scientific element to the book.

It is a refreshingly down to earth accounting of how it feels to have a potentially life-threatening condition be diagnosed almost out of the blue.

This is an interesting guide to fermenting vegetables for a complete beginner. It covers the basics you will need to know so that you can get started quickly on producing your own fermented vegetables.

I bought this because I love sauerkraut and was interested in starting to ferment other types of vegetables for the health benefits (as well as the taste!). It's given me a couple of new ideas that I can't wait to try.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read, 22 Oct. 2014
This was a compelling read, even if I couldn't buy into all of the theories presented.

It is a refreshingly down-to earth look at the differences between genders when it comes to sex, love and dating. Some of it is very illuminating, particularly as a woman to see things from a male perspective. And some of the observations on female behaviour were amusingly accurate.

However, although the book does regularly draw on research and studies to back up points, it doesn't do this consistently for every point made. I found a few times when reading that there were some things I just could not get on board with. For example, there is a comment noting that research shows that women who don't want children have either had bad childhoods, or are selfish. I can go with the bad childhood thing, but how do you actually quantify what 'selfish' is scientifically? And the research alluded to isn't cited so it's hard to gain any further insight into what exactly prompted that opinion.

Overall it reminded me rather a lot of the kind of science you might read in the Daily Mail. Interesting, sometimes amusing, sometimes informative - but probably best followed up with some independent research of your own before you go around quoting it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read, 22 Oct. 2014

I was excited to read this book, having already read 'Amelias Inheritance' by the same author. This is a very different story, but retains the same elements of delving deep into the more disturbing elements of human nature and dealing with difficult topics like rape and racism in a compelling way.

There are many plot twists that keep you turning the pages, and every time I thought I had connected the dots, the author managed to surprise me again.

A very good read if you enjoy sensitively drawn and complex characters and a plot that will keep you guessing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for lovers of Fantasy and Mythology alike, 20 Oct. 2014

This is an excellent recounting of a huge amount of Greek mythology through the eyes of Athena. Not only does the author bring Athena to life as a person we can actually relate to, but she actually shows us many of the myths through the eyes of Athena, considering how these would impact her as well as the other deities involved.

As a practising Wiccan, this is possibly one of the most entertaining and educational accounts of Greek mythology that I have read, and it also appeals greatly to me as a reader of fantasy- mainly because of the excellent characterisation of all the deities.

I particularly enjoyed the 'epilogue' - a kind of 'where are they now' feature, which made me smile a lot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful reading, 20 Oct. 2014
This was an interesting read. As someone with a recovering alcoholic as a family member, it was interesting to me to get an insight into the behaviour and emotions of an alcoholic. It also made me examine my own feelings about alcohol and my relationship with it.

Sometimes funny, often poignant and always down to earth, this book helps us question what- if anything- we are giving up when we chose to stop drinking, and what do we gain instead. There are also practical and helpful tips on how to stay motivated to keep off the booze so that there is something for every personality type to choose from to keep them 'on the wagon'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great information, 19 Oct. 2014
A good guide to lowering your blood sugar, and this is something that is particularly useful in this day and age when added sugar is lurking in foods like bread and pasta sauces.

Although I haven't been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, I have noticed that I do exhibit some of the signs of insulin resistance, and a an apple shape I am particularly at risk of health complications from a poor diet.

This book contains handy guidelines for following a low-sugar and low-carb lifestyle that make the transition easy and simple. Great advice for everyone- not just pre-diabetics!

I've always struggled to get more fruit and vegetables into my diet, and I could probably stand to lose a few pounds too.

This book is full of great, common sense information about how to incorporate juicing into your life without succumbing to faddy diets.

The artwork is stunning, and it is worth a download on the strength of that alone.

However, the story is also captivating- dealing with dark issues and ideas. There's enough glimmers of light to keep it from being too depressing. I hope it's the start of a series as I feel like I need to know more about this world!

My niece (who is four) enjoyed these stories a lot. They are just the right length to hold her attention, and she especially enjoyed the story about Princess Ella's teeth!

The stories are fun and definitely age appropriate. My personal favourite is the one about a rainy day as it brings back memories of my own childhood - so I enjoyed reading that one to her as well.

A really good choice for the specified age range with lots of stories to choose from so there will be something in here to captivate any child.
