3.0 out of 5 stars a lot of data - but little discussion, 14 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book contains a great deal of interesting data, from 20 years of testing children, adolescents, and adults referred for ADHD, on a variety of neuropsychological tests and self-report measures. However, the potential purchaser should be warned that the book reads like a PhD thesis and is not worked into the more processed form, with more extended discussion, that we would normally expect in a book. Thus, most of the book (from page 29 to 415) consists of page after page of pie charts and figures - material that normally one might expect to find in an appendix rather than the main text. There is no summary or discussion of the findings and their implications! The closest to this is the two and a half page introduction, where the author presents her conclusion that the essential feature of ADHD is an attentional disorder, and that many symptoms and traits that tend to be attributed to ADHD are actually the result of additional or comorbid conditions. Whilst this is certainly a reasonably argument to pursue, she does not elaborate. Overall, I am glad Dr Fisher has published her data - an important gift to the academic community and the result of a vast amount of work over 20 years - but I just wish she had taken the time to write a little more summary and discussion of the implications of the work, and elaboration of her own view of the nature of ADHD.

Ego Psychology: v. 2: Theory and Practice
Ego Psychology: v. 2: Theory and Practice
by G Blanck
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £59.00

5.0 out of 5 stars an under-recognised classic, 14 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an under-recognised classic. The Blancks have explored the full potential of the ego aspects of the classic psychoanalytic model, showing that attention to ego functioning can often be the most important aspect of therapy with many clients. Since the ego is the collection of functions that mediate between [1] the inner world of desire and biological need, [2] the person's prevailing values and moral code, and [3] the outer world of reality, then almost all forms of psychotherapy can be subsumed within Ego Psychology. Freud and his legacy are as relevant now as they were in the 19th century when he was first writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars simple to use, 13 Feb. 2014
I like this timer because, once set, it is very easy to use. Whilst it is possible to set complex patterns of on and off, for each day, it is also easy just to press the 'advance' button to set the heating on or off. Separate functions for heating and hot water can be set. Not all of the modern digital heating programmers are so easy to use as this one. It also looks quite nice

Bush Wood Effect DAB/FM Stereo Radio with Alarm Clock
Bush Wood Effect DAB/FM Stereo Radio with Alarm Clock

2.0 out of 5 stars worked great for just under one year ...., 2 Jan. 2014
This was a beautiful radio - lovely sound - displayed the correct time obtained from the radio stations - and it looks nice too. Unfortunately, after less than one year, its display completely stopped working, with result that it can do nothing except broadcast radio 4 and operate at alarm at 8am, the settings it had before malfunctioning. I have tried everything I could think of to nudge it to reset, but the display screen remains blank. Unfortunately there seems to be no helpline.

This was the third DAB radio I have bought - all of them malfunctioned - all different brands. DAB radio is heavily promoted by the BBC, but the quality and reliability of the radios really does not support this. The old style analogue FM radios were almost always reliable for years.

5.0 out of 5 stars works extremely well, 30 Dec. 2013

It is always a pleasure when products work easily and exactly as promised.
I took this out of the box, plugged it in to the power socket, connected it to the computer, and then enjoyed perfect internet access. The whole process took less than a minute.
It connected seamlessly with my existing Develo network - but these two units can work together on their own. It provides a wired connection, which obviously is more reliable than wireless - but other Develo units can provide wireless functions.
A powerline, such as Develo, is the ideal solution to the common problem of needing internet access in various rooms of a house, when often wireless routers provide insufficient penetration of walls. Whether other brands are as reliable I do not know - but Develo is German and it does work! I know there is also a helpline that is readily accessible.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful classic text, 23 Mar. 2013

This review is from: Migraine (Paperback)
This is a wonderful classic text by a renowned writer and expert. This will help any migraine sufferer - or any healing practitioner or psychotherapist - to understand more about the many forms and expressions of migraine. It should be noted that migrainous conditions can be extremely severe and disabling, and manifest in a variety of ways that may not initially be obviously related to migraine. This is particularly the case with hemiplegic migraines, that can generate paralysis type symptoms.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent resource, 23 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This an excellent resource for those interested in developing a respectable academic underpinning for their integrative practice. Despite the misleading directions on NICE guidelines, most experienced psychotherapists realise than no one approach is appropriate for every problem, and an integration of the skills and iinsights from a range of traditions is most effective.
