4.0 out of 5 stars As with so many digital transfers of classic recordings, ..., 17 May 2015

As with so many digital transfers of classic recordings, the editing can be appalling with even sometimes the order of tracks being changed. This one is spoiled by an abrupt cut-off on track 17 disc 3. Hence the star drop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best constructed goggles I've ever laid my hands on, 8 Nov. 2014

Lovely. Best constructed goggles I've ever laid my hands on, and they come with nose clip, ear plugs, instructions and carry box. The only cavil might be that the strap quick-release mechanism could be smoother but this is easily blasted out of the water by the robust construction which is hard to find outside outright diving gear. Eat your heart out Speedo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wrong again., 20 Feb. 2013
The iHole. Inspired. Should have won. East Of The West which took the prize was a so-what meandering naval-gazing tale about a wimp who never did anything until it was too late so that he could wallow in the fallout. The judges got it wrong last year too. Let the readers vote I say, instead of a literary junta.

All the rave reviewers evidently don't mind splurges of Middle English which at points threaten to derail the narrative. Nor myself usally, but after consulting a well known glossary of Middle English and not finding one example of this idiom I was not impressed. As for the more updated version of English, who speaks like these people - even allowing for the setting in academia? The syntax is a clunky mid C20 exhumation and given the year 2054 hasn't evolved apart from some stilted and laboured attempts at word coinage. "My Goodness", someone says in response to something that has startled him. The main character, Kivrin, takes far too long to get out of that wood, what with all the pretty descriptions of nature and different hues of nightfall. She's nearly as wet as a Dickens heroine without the consumption (just flu). The story and plotting is sound but Willis's drawing of character is a hit and miss affair. Gilchrist is a cartoon, and Mrs Gaddson is pure Dickens - done badly. A tougher editor would have helped. M.Crichton did it much better with Timeline, though it's easy to see where he got the idea.

This is hardly definitive of the year it purports to represent. One wonders why the suits bother to put out an album with such little care. Why so few tracks when there is enough room on a disc for twice the number of tracks listed here? That said, there are some iconic moments, as with the Aquarius number and Time of the Season, but they are all trailing in the wake of the stand-out track Crimson and Clover which, if you've heard Sweet Jane by the Velvet Underground, makes you wonder who inspired whom, including later songs such as Spanish Stroll (Mink De Ville), Werewolves of London (Warren Zevon), Just Like a Woman (Bob Dylan) and the rest.
