5.0 out of 5 stars Don't hesitate - the best TV box set money can buy, 10 Nov 2006
I sold all of my individual sets to buy this overview of every episode of the greatest TV show ever made, and I am not regretting it for a second.

Any box set bringing together seasons of the West Wing has an excellent starting point. And this new set does its subject matter proud, improving on the individual season sets in a number of ways.

For a start, it offers five hours of pretty excellent extras - documentaries, bloopers, deleted scenes, among other things. It is a shame there are no cast or production commentaries on any of the episodes, but the extras are all fine in themselves.

The previous packaging for the season-by-season sets - the card-based, expanding boxes, which show wear and tear and are darned unwieldy to open - have been replaced by slimline DVD cases, holding two discs each, all packaged within season-by-season slip cases.

The whole thing is packaged in an elegant, exceptionally compact box, which you would never guess holds more than 150 episodes of the best television money can buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be put off by the weight, 3 Jan 2006
Many will be put off by the sheer size of this weighty tome. At more than 800 pages, it is not a quick book. But it is one of the most fulfilling reads of recent years. The story of a wealthy man who befriends and effectively adopts a prostitute as his mistress in Victorian London, it is a story rich in lush detail, from the explicit depiction of his relationship with his woman through to the sumptuous evocation of life in the British capital in the 19th Century. It was a book which, once started, I couldn't put down - the characters are so vividly and emotively drawn, I was compelled to follow their lives through to the conclusion of this story. It is crying out to be dramatised and, if it isn't already, is sure to be in production any time soon. Make sure to read the book before it does though - it is a glorious experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars A genuine work of genius, 24 Oct 2003
I reached the age of 36 before reading To Kill A Mockingbird for the first time. My emotions are divided; disappointment that I had spent so long getting round to reading such a magnificent book; but excited to be discovering such a work of art.
The plot is outlined in other reviews here, so I won't go there. But, this is a gripping, touching, triumph of a novel, with barely a wasted page (perhaps even a sentence).
Nobody should do what I did, and leave it another day without reading it.

Mr. Wolf's Pancakes (Mini picture books)

4.0 out of 5 stars gloriously funny, 19 Sep 2003
This is a wonderful book, clever, intelligent, and very funny.
Suitable for any child from two upwards, it is the slight tale of Mr Wolf's attempts to make some pancakes, despite the rude lack of support from his friends around town, including the three little pigs, Mother hubbard et al.
Delightfully illustrated, it subverts the image of big bad wolf, turning him into the victim, until the hilarious denoument which, on reading it for the first time, had me creasing up in laughter (which interrupted my daughter's bedtime story that night).
Glorious, highly recommended. Buy it for a friend's child too.
