Flappers: Six Women of a Dangerous Generation
Flappers: Six Women of a Dangerous Generation
by Judith Mackrell
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.29

4.0 out of 5 stars If you want a book that describes the Roaring Twenties' Smart Set, then this is for you, 11 July 2014

Flappers: Six Women of a Dangerous Generation is a very vivid snapshot of the lives of six women at a time when society was loosening its control of women after 1918. Lady Diana Cooper and Nancy Cunard came from very privileged backgrounds where money was a huge advantage when it came to personal freedom. Nancy Cunard's life was particularly vividly described although her life ended very tragically.

Josephine Baker was probably the most interesting of the lot and many French people still talk about her - her funeral was attended by thousands. If you want a book that describes the Roaring Twenties' Smart Set, then this is for you. I found it fascinating.

5.0 out of 5 stars The 12 Year Reich - an eye-opener on everyday life, 26 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having watched Generation War on BBC2 recently, I wanted to read this book to gain more insight into daily life in the Third Reich. It's extremely well written and Richard Grunberger's style is not dry as so many historians fall into this trap. The book arrived quickly and is an acceptable copy.

This CD was bought as a gift for my mother as she loves Bryn Terfel's voice. She loved it and has played it to death since receiving it. It was a bargain and the seller sent it very quickly, so 5 stars, and I would use this seller again.

Death Comes to Pemberley [DVD]
Death Comes to Pemberley [DVD]
Dvd ~ Matthew Rhys
Price: 8.54

5.0 out of 5 stars Brooding and atmospheric production, 7 April 2014
I read Death comes to Pemberley by P D James and was disappointed, so came to this miniseries with trepidation over the Christmas holiday. From the start, things developed quickly and the whole mood was very atmospheric, with dark and deep woods and an ominous feel. I was hooked. Matthew Rhys as Darcy and Anna Maxwell Martin as the Darcys were excellently cast and Lizzie had a quiet maturity in her new role as chatelaine of a large country house. Tom Ward is always worth watching and looked delicious in his costumes AND on horseback, but Trevor Eve as Sir Selwyn almost stole the show. He came across as a rather sinister individual who wanted a hanging ("we have our man") as quickly as possible.

Mr Bennett made me laugh out loud when he escaped to Pemberley's library to get away from his shrill wife. Books! Peace and quiet at last. Again, perfect casting for James Fleet.

This production was ideal: cast, costumes, music and, above all, photography. 5 stars.

Gustav Klimt (Prestel Postcard Books)
by Prestel
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Very sharp reproductions of Klimt's work, 11 Jan 2014

Klimt's work is always fascinating and little book is an excellent product. The cards are of very good quality and the reproductions are first class. The format is ideal if you don't want to write a letter but just a note to art-loving friends.

The Girl Who Fell From The Sky
The Girl Who Fell From The Sky
by Simon Mawer
Edition: Paperback
Price: 7.82

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read, but the ending was a letdown, 27 Nov 2013
I have read William Boyd's Restless and thoroughly enjoyed it so came to Simon Mawer's The Girl Who Fell From The Sky to see if the novels compared. Publishers seem to have a fixation for putting female spies in red macs - the same image is on both novels - so not the most subtle clothing to choose but it probably catches the eye in a bookshop.

Marion Sutro is a young British/French girl who is recruited into the SOE and is parachuted into France. She comes across as rather cold and arrogant but those qualities serve her well in her task to lure a physicist to England, or did they? I won't give away any of the plot but the novel is very gripping.

There is a very tangible sense of tension, the way agents are constantly living on a knife edge with little sleep and the sense that they could be betrayed at any time and how a casual conversation could lead to arrest by the Gestapo. I've read that many of the female agents sent to France were very young - Marian is in her early 20s - and their life expectancy in the field was brief.

My only gripe with this novel is that the ending is so rushed. Yes, the reader knows how things will pan out but I felt that Mawer was in a rush to finish it and get it off the publisher. A final chapter would have been so much better and my feeling was, where is it?

This novel would make a good film - Restless by William Boyd was a two-part TV series - also featuring a female agent.

The Borgias - Season 1 [DVD]
The Borgias - Season 1 [DVD]
Dvd ~ Jeremy Irons
Price: 11.30

5.0 out of 5 stars Intrigue and skullduggery on a grand scale in Renaissance Italy, 23 Nov 2013

This review is from: The Borgias - Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
The Borgias is very compelling viewing, particularly if you want to be educated in how aristocrats and clerics lived in the 15th century. The costumes and settings are fabulous and the actors look as though they were born to wear the clothes. Initially I wasn't sure about the casting of Jeremy Irons as Cardinal Borgia, soon to become Pope Alexander VI, but his villainy is masked by a silkiness of speech and behaviour. The best casting is for the roles of Cesare Borgia (Francois Arnaud) and Lucrezia Borgia (Holliday Grainger) as their screen chemistry is superb. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and look forward to watching Season 2.

Box set arrived in very good time and was well packaged - this edition was better than expected for the price. 5 stars and I would buy from this seller again.

Full Circle: How the Classical World Came Back to Us
Full Circle: How the Classical World Came Back to Us
by Ferdinand Mount
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 20.00

5.0 out of 5 stars We think we're sophisticated now?, 23 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book has been a wonderful read and Ferdinand Mount has a very dry sense of humour, something I enjoy very much. Full Circle is perfect for anyone who loves classical Greece and Rome and how their influence is still with us today in the 21st century. The book was a great bargain and arrived very well packaged, so would buy from this seller again.
