5.0 out of 5 stars never have cold or wet feet again, 3 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Really great boots. You will never have cold or wet feet again. As waterproof as wellies but as warm as proper boots. I only need a single pair of socks in these boots, even in subzero temperatures. And unlike wellies they are breathable so your feet stay fresh, dry and they don't even smell (much). Very good value compared to Dubarry, Musto and other overpriced competitors.

Principles of Political Economy Books IV and V (Penguin Classics)
Principles of Political Economy Books IV and V (Penguin Classics)
by John Stuart Mill
Edition: Mass Market Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars all time classic - mandatory reading for anyone who purports to know anything, 3 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Mill has little need of praise from the likes of me.

But here is an interesting thing:
Like most editions of this book published in the last fifty years, this one omits Books I-III. This is significant becase in Book III, Mill clearly lays out the argument against fractional reserve banking systems and government control of the monetary base - hallmarks of Western government policy since the second world war. Mill is firmly opposed to both fractional reserve and quantitative easing and he explains why with his usual mix of precision, insight and classic Victorian style. In short - they ultimately and inevitably bring about total economic collapse (sooner or later). He lists all the collapses which have been brought about by this means from Roman times to 19th century france. Editors of future editions will have to add a footnote to the effect that the USA and EU can be added to the list. Hold onto your hats.

Size and Cycle
Size and Cycle
by John Tyler Bonner
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars an underappreciated classic, 3 April 2013

This review is from: Size and Cycle (Hardcover)
At a time when the naivety of the Modern Synthesis is coming under ever more critical examination, it is refreshing to find such clarity of thought and exposition in a book published in 1965. Bonner was ahead of his time.

Basically, Bonner wants us to think of whole lifecycles as phenotypes, rather than simply taking the adult organism to be the phenotype and development to be a side-show which gets us to the adult stage. (Thus he acknowledges the process/product distinction and argues that evolution is best seen as acting on the *process* of lifecycles and development, rather than the *product* of a point-in-time snapshot of the adult organism. Heroclitus would approve.)

Bonner points out that, with increased size comes increased division of labour and specialisation of parts. Sound familiar? He presents a big-picture theoretical framework for understanding some aspects of what we now call Major Transitions in Evolution. Anyone interested in the new takes on evolution currently en vogue (Jablonka/Lamb/Kaplan/Pigliucci/Dupré etc.) would enjoy this book.

This book was recommended to me by Prof Rick Grosberg of UC Davis - high praise indeed.

Lepai TA2020+ Tripath Class-T Hi-Fi Audio Mini Amplifier with Power Supply
Lepai TA2020+ Tripath Class-T Hi-Fi Audio Mini Amplifier with Power Supply

4.0 out of 5 stars good quality sound, power supply poor, 3 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The first thing to say is that this amplifier does its job very well. It amplifies the input signal admirably. Four stars for that.

There are a few negative things about it, all of which could easily be rectified (and none of which relate to the core functionality):
-- The power supply cable provided is much too short (about 80cm) and is a US-style unit with a travel adapter stuck on it. Not a quality solution. The power supply unit has been added by the importer and problems with it are not Lepai's fault.
-- The power socket on the amp is cheap and wobbly, I expect to need to repair it at some point.
-- The volume knob is surrounded by a bright blue LED ring which looks very tacky when lit. I will need to open up the unit to cut the power supply to the LED to stop it.
-- I chose this unit for the old-school, no-nonsense appearance. The front panel is indeed no-nonsense (blue LED ring excepted) but the top of the unit has tacky writing on it (as pictured on Amazon). This would be better on the underside, so it would be hidden when mounted onto a surface.
-- the bass and treble variation controls are un-necessary additions and dilute the minimalism. You can turn off the bass/treble variation function but of course the knobs remain on the front panel. What I'd really like is an on/off switch and a volume knob only. That would be cool.

Torch Front High Beamer 5 White Led Light
Torch Front High Beamer 5 White Led Light
Price: £16.49

3.0 out of 5 stars good light but the fixing is brittle, 7 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Like many of the LED bike lights on the market, this product is great while it works but is not reliable.

The mounting slot on the bottom of the light is fragile and mine has already started to break away.
My partner has one which stopped working for no apparent reason.

Very bright while working but not durable.

This is a good basic hand lens for the amateur naturalist. It's solidly made and feels robust and good quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars does the job but croc clips could be more robust, 7 Mar. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this inverted after the Ring Automotive RINV300 let me down. This product seems to work well, although the croc clips are a bit too flimsy for my liking. It's a struggle to get them onto the battery terminals and the insulators usually become dislodged in the process, which is a bit worrying.

It also make a low humming noise. At first this is quite conspicuous but it's the sort of background noise you don't notice after a few minutes.

Nevertheless, it seems to charge my MacBook Pro laptop from my Lucas leisure battery without any problems, so I am reasonably happy with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars robust, effective and dependable; a permanent solution, 7 Mar. 2013
This is the real thing. Solid iron, very heavy, very sturdy, very simple, no-nonsense, hard to see how it could go wrong. Bullet-proof.

I have had one of these for two years, kept permanently outdoors (under cover from rain) and it is still going strong. (It has gone slightly rusty but that is my fault and in no way affects the performance of the cooker). I have cooked about 100 dinners and probably 300 kettle boils on it so far, in weather down to -10C and look forward to many more. I use propane because butane is not effective at low temperatures.

Don't bother with the flimsy camping-branded stuff that will break after one season. Buy a proper one like this and then you're done for good.

I would be very surprised if I ever have to replace this item.

1.0 out of 5 stars overpriced - can be bought for around £18 elsewhere on Amazon uk, 4 Jan. 2013
As I write this, the product is priced at £37. The same product is for sale (without the Gelert branding) for around £18 elsewhere on Amazon UK.

Like any heater which burns hydrocarbons and does not have a flue pipe, this heater emits water vapour which can cause condensation problems if used in an un-ventilated space.

This heater works fine above 10 degree C but in colder temperatures it will not work (gas combustion will not be sustained). This is probably when you need it most!

Above 10 degrees and with good ventilation this is a nice clean and convenient little heater.
