Land of Promise: the British Documentary Movement 1930-1950 (4-disc set) [DVD]
Dvd ~ various

5.0 out of 5 stars buy it., 28 Nov 2013
though beyond my time its a lovely set. it documents a history of the british documentary movement it clearly records our changed society and is very educational. Slum clearence being a perfect examlpe. The price alone is a bargain. The book enclosed is wworth the money alone. i find it hard to realise it was only 40 years ago. most of the production team invloved in each film had evolved into many famous filmmakers from british transport films to michael jacksons thriller video (Rob Paynter director of photography) It can be tearjerking yet amazingly accurate and was a first, to allow people being filmed to be able to be candid. Buy it you will be hooked on it plus if you have children they would realise that children were happier without their laptops, mobile phones,Barbie, the list is endless.
last point the children then looked happier.
a big thank you to all who brought us this set as i have the full set of British Transport films regarding the railways.

4.0 out of 5 stars Manhattan project, 26 Jan 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a good dvd mostly for its one to one interviews with S Ulam,H Bethe,R Serber,L.R. Grove and many of the original Manhattan Project scientists. Tells the story of Los Alamos. A rating of four as its not full of atomic bombs exploding but if your a fan of anything atomic this dvd will be of interest to you. Most of the people interviewed are no longer with us.

5.0 out of 5 stars thought provoking, 15 Jan 2011

As a collector of anything to do with atomic energy/research i was very dissturbed by the sight of dignified people who despite the horrors of atomic weapons. The most cynical part is, where a group of survivers who were taken to the USA,met the actual pilots who dropped the bomb on a tv show. Ok at that time but to reflect very sad. Anyone who thinks nuking any country is acceptable will change their mind. How ironic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes us think, 2 Nov 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very well made high quality documentary with the most stunning material ever brought together. The footage of the orbit which clearly shows footage of camp fires in n africa is beyond description. Im buying more copies for christmas gifts as they are a must have for anyone.
Throughout the entire dvd is breahttaking non stop thought provoking comments by the astronaughts. The computer technology used would stretch beyond a calculator used today. As i sit on a sony laptop dual cpu loads ram many thousands perhaps milloin times more powerful than used on the early apollo missions.I read and watch loads of dvds mostly physics, nuclear tests, trinity and beyond, the manhattan project but rate this one as no 1. The picture of Earth from the Moon is one ive seen on my i touch and is awesome
Make me think Are We Alone?

5.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT READ, 22 Aug 2010
A good read. It highlights a pure genius who helped designed the first nuclear reactor. Not only that he predicted the arms race.
To be Mr Szilard was not only a genious he was a comedian with a dry sense of humour. Groves wanted him interned as an allien but the president of the USA refuesed to sign the order.
Mr Szilard was tailed by many FBI officers and he knew this. He even said how useless the FBI were in following him and often asked them for a drink. He once was followed into a building and stayed in it for 3 days. He would often pretend to be absent minded and said aloud where he was travelling to but didnt make the journey.
All in all one of the truest genious of the last century and hillarious too.
If you like reading books by the likes of Fermi.Teller and Oppie this is for you.

Historic Photos of the Manhattan Project
Historic Photos of the Manhattan Project

5.0 out of 5 stars a good read for anyone who is interested in the history of the atom bomb, 25 May 2010

While most of us probably associate only Los Alamos NM with the Manhattan Project, the large majority of photographs in this book are of Oak Ridge TN and Hanford WA, where the extraction of enriched uranium and plutonium took place (respectively).

There are a few photographs of the big names of the project, such as Groves, Fermi, and Oppenheimer, but almost all the photographs of people show some of the thousands of working people and their families that were part of the project. The selection includes crowd scenes, men and women at work, and many photographs of children.

I have always heard that the Manhattan Project was an effort equivalent to building an entirely new auto industry in the United States in three years. The photographs in this book make that clear in a way that just reading about it can't. The physical plant required for the project was enormous, and the infrastructure needed for the workers enormous as well.

The book also is something of a field guide to the America of the 1940s, particularly as regards Oak Ridge. All the women are wearing dresses (as are almost all of the little girls) and most of the men wear hats. The crowd scenes are a sea of white faces.

Oak Ridge was segregated, but there were black workers and it is to the author's credit that he found and included several photographs of them.

In sum, the book is a must-have for anyone interested in the Manhattan Project, and an excellent buy for anyone interested in photographs of mid-century America.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic dvd set, 2 April 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
One of the best DVD sets lovingly restored and still one of the most hillarious comedy ever made. I bought 2 copies one to play and one put away. The out takes are brilliant. Infact watching each episode you can see the actors fluff lines and giggle whcih makes for a briliant production. Derek Guiller,as Korky, is very funny indeed. I remember him as the caretaker from Please Sir.ll i all one of the best DVD sets ive ever bought and ever will i guess.
