Airfields & Airmen of Arras (Battleground Europe)
Airfields & Airmen of Arras (Battleground Europe)
by Mike O'Connor
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.92

4.0 out of 5 stars One in a series, 29 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A good guide to the airfields and airmen of both sides who deserve our respect for not only fighting the enemy but also the weather and, on occasions, their less than perfect flying machines.

4.0 out of 5 stars A 'Good' Osprey, 29 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Let's face it, Osprey Publications can be thought to taking the rise out of the purchasers of military history on the occasions when the promise does not match the finished product by being rather light on information and literally provide a thin publication. I am glad to say this is not the case with this in their series on World War One. It covers the make-up of the Corps and emphasises its homogeneity that, in my opinion, gave it an extra fillip and so raise it to be one of the best Corps - an elite in fact - wherever it fought. It rightly supports these brave men who came to fight for the 'mother country' - be it the UK or for the French Canadians their spiritual one.

Arras, 1917
Arras, 1917
by Walter Reid
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.05

4.0 out of 5 stars Personal memory, 29 Dec 2013

This review is from: Arras, 1917 (Paperback)
As with most books concerning the personal experience of the Great War you can only be thankful that the post WW2 generations have never had to suffer as Reid's did, there is some consolation that they forced a defeat on the enemy allowing the Entente to claim a bloody, but never futile, victory.

The Confusion of Command: The Memoirs of Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas D'Oyly 'Snowball' Snow 1914 -1918
The Confusion of Command: The Memoirs of Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas D'Oyly 'Snowball' Snow 1914 -1918
by Dan Snow
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £15.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, 29 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Rather a different look at the Western Front through the eyes of a relation - Dan Snow of TV fame - and Mark Pottle an Oxford historian with a growing reputation for excellent research. It seeks to contextualise the general's diary entries with modern scholarship about the campaigns that he writes about. I believe Snow fell from his horse while out riding and broke his hip, invaliding him from the Front - eliciting an order from Army HQ that senior officers were forbidden to ride for pleasure or exercise!

The Secrets of Rue St. Roch: Hope and Heroism Behind Enemy Lines in the First World War
The Secrets of Rue St. Roch: Hope and Heroism Behind Enemy Lines in the First World War
by Janet Morgan
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting, 29 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A colleague has met the authoress of this very interesting book concerning espionage during the Great War and the brave men and women who sought and finally achieved the expulsion of a cruel invader. An unusual book because of the period, but the acts of dearing do make you admire the people who inhabit the pages.

Torpedo Squadron Four - A Cockpit View of World War II
Torpedo Squadron Four - A Cockpit View of World War II
Price: £1.49

4.0 out of 5 stars Well worth it, 29 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
For those interested in these very brave young men who battled an enemy who possessed superior aircraft. It is written in a very matter of fact way without any 'gung-ho' heroics, which of course makes it all the more readable and humbling.

Over There War Scenes on the Western Front

A contemporary 'look' at the Western Front - poetry lovers beware - as if memory serves me well, he does not mention futility.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY !!, 29 Dec 2013

Terrible, terrible machine - kept blowing fuses every 5 minutes, which we had to then order to start the cycle all over again. Go back to a corded machine with a safety cut out - just incase you cut the cable like me - hence my original purchase of this, this...ugh!
