Dr.Stephen Bull is a very experienced historian and writer, this is another of his excellent books as it is two in one, depicting as it does the two protagonists of the Somme 1916 and is, in my opinion, one of the best short histories of the battle. Of course both armies evolved over the whole of the Great War and the majority who made up the units of 1914 were very different from those of 1916, who again varied greatly from two years later. Here we have the unseasoned volunteers of the British, sure of the righteousness of their cause, versus their enemy whose units were still leavened with many professional pre-war regulars; this was to be both their graveyards and a blow to the German army from which it never truly recovered. My only criticism of the book is a frequent Kindle problem - the maps which I am sure in the printed version are, because of its larger format, easier to read than viewing it on a 'tablet'.

Oh how I wish all Osprey publications could be as good as this one. I have several hundred as I have been collecting their work for over 40 years so, like many others, have had to put up with the poor through average to a few absolutely excellent and this is definitely one of the latter. However, I write this as someone who knows just a little of the period and so this book may be too superficial for the very knowledgeable or expert - it is an excellent primer and Mark Lardas should be congratulated about his clear and concise writing which makes an interesting subject very accessible, we have all read books that should be all these things but some writers reduce fascination to boredom.
Peter Dennis has also contributed well thought out illustrations to accompany the text, you can feel the terror of the French 'Loup de Mer' as he boards a British Frigate only to be confronted with a more than irate Royal Marine wielding a musket and bayonet.

Warships of the Anglo-Dutch Wars 165274 (New Vanguard)
Warships of the Anglo-Dutch Wars 165274 (New Vanguard)
by Angus Konstam
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.99

3.0 out of 5 stars More editing required, 1 April 2014
I would have given this four stars except for the fact that the whole could have been made better by greater editing both of the text and the directions given to the artist about the famous Dutch raid of June 1667 on the English fleet in the Medway near the port of Chatham, Kent. We - the English - were caught completely with our pants, or sails down. I have many books by Angus Kostam and this does not come up to his usual excellent standard - see his books on the Tudor navy in this series as excellent though small works on the period. However, as there is little work on the Anglo-Dutch wars I must recommend this book because the facts are in there and so makes a good introduction to the ships and the differences in their construction, the brave men from both sides who sailed in them and the policies of their respective governments who sent them in harms way.

A must have for anyone visiting Slovenia and its immediate border with Italy, an absolutely wonderful part of the world and well worth the effort climbing up the mountains to do part of the Walk of Peace
[...]
You will admire the soldiers of both sides, and pity them at the same time.

Does exactly what it says on the tin...if you want a list of brave 'daring do' by the boys in navy blue during the Great War here it is. Rightly it salutes many men who were equipped with the (w)right stuff, one of whom I met many years ago, absolutely thrilling/frightening tales - but he loved telling them.

My first Kindle purchase of an Osprey book as my shelves are groaning with books collected over 50+ years. Rather pleased with the outcome, good book with much information and the plates align.

Rather a small book, but an excellent one written by an artist who really had no right to be in uniform - he was there to paint the 'great and good'. Worth it alone for the laugh out loud story of his encounter with an irate - apoplectic - senior officer!

A good guide to the airfields and airmen of both sides who deserve our respect for not only fighting the enemy but also the weather and, on occasions, their less than perfect flying machines.
