Undertones of War (Penguin Modern Classics)
Undertones of War (Penguin Modern Classics)
by Edmund Blunden
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.79

4.0 out of 5 stars Reality of trench life, 11 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Grim reality of trench life, not unlike the great Chronicles of Ancient Sunlight series of novels by Henry Williamson. Good to find it available after all these years. Poems seem lesser than Owen's, to me, at least.

As it says on the tin, or rather jar, but great value over those packed in posh boxes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Product fine, Amazon not, 8 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The product was as expected, when it finally arrived weeks late for a birthday due to Amazon's incompetent and uncaring delivery system. Amazon is great when it works, but worth reminding ourselves of the times when it doesn't.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good present for a cricket lover, 7 Nov. 2014

This review is from: A Tale of Ten Wickets (Paperback)
Cleverly crafted set of loosely connected short stories around the core of a travelling social cricket club playing villages - a theme dear to its author's heart. A good present for a cricket lover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Imaginative fiction based on Minoan/Mycenaean myths for young teens and adults, 25 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Probably appeals to those with an interest in myths and prehistory, and those who enjoyed her Wolf Brother series of novels.
Probably not for those before age 10 or eleven. Appeals to both genders.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pricey for plastic box, 17 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fairly easy to assemble. Only time will tell how well it works. Instructions clear. Nothing more needs to be said but Amazon's irritating system insists on more words so there they are.

Homage to Catalonia (Penguin Modern Classics)
Homage to Catalonia (Penguin Modern Classics)

4.0 out of 5 stars Honest but flawed, 29 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Rereading after decades, well worthwhile. Surprising how naive the striving to be honest Orwell can seem today.
Remembered as a critic of communist duplicity and terror tactics, Orwell shows a tolerance for murder by the "workers" and their militia in 1936 which is quite shocking from a middle-class meddling do-gooder. How the sincere can still be wrong!

3.0 out of 5 stars Some effort at impartial judgement, 29 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It is hard to avoid a history of this war becoming a recitation of war crimes. Beevor tries to describe the misconduct of all participants fairly, but an anti-Franco posture is built into almost all of us, and that has long led to the left getting an easy ride.
Seeing the civil wars in Iraq and Syria today gives a better insight into why Britain and France chose non-interventionism.

The Spanish Civil War: Reaction, Revolution and Revenge
The Spanish Civil War: Reaction, Revolution and Revenge
by Paul Preston
Edition: Paperback

2.0 out of 5 stars Left-wing bias evident, 29 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A really horrible tale of atrocities by people set free to hate by ideologies, against a long history of the same.
Preston really fails to capture the enormity of his story, and majors on the crimes of Franco and his allies. In doing so, he inadvertently underplays the extent to which a socialist revolution was underway before Franco's coup. Little explanation of why the officer class was divided, what happened to the vitally important navy and why, how the communists penetrated the socialists and the republican government despite being a small minority of the people, or the roots of regional separatism.
