Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Far too young to have known this band in its prime, The Sound have always been on the list of bands too check out, however the cost and dubious reviews of re-issue quality put me off until now. Worth the wait? Big fat yes! The songs, guitar work are excellent, each album charts the great progression of this ridiculously under rated group, post punk pioneers who helped inspire many genres and bands that followed, out classing many of there contemporaries and today's current crop. Buy it you'll find something to love.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dramatic genre defying album, 7 Nov 2013
This review is from: Photographs & Letters (Audio CD)
I couldn't believe me ears when I first put this on, I assumed my usual position for listening to Swans music (crouching behind my sofa with cheese in my ears, gag firmly in mouth), and then instead of the expected firm jolt to the nethers the room was filled with this inoffensive aural pap. Fearing Mr Gira was lulling me into a false sense of security, it took me some time to come out from behind the said sofa. On closer inspection you can see that the band were struggling on this album, somewhat of an identity crisis, song titles, subject matter etc bare little resemblance to the previous material, they even look completely different, probably due to pressure from the label/management to come up with another hit like there early pop albums, Filth, Cop etc. Luckily it didn't last. Not to be confused with another group with the same name. Thanks Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sum of its parts, 8 Oct 2010
This review is from: Interpol (Audio CD)
As many reviewers have stated, this album is a grower, and it surely is. To me its the culmination of the journey so far, taking the unique elements from all the previous releases and making the most complete album thus far. It sounds like the band found the vibe they were looking for and just failed to grasp on Love to Admire, and then some! Its a very big sounding album, it fills the room when played on a decent stereo and deserves listening too in full, the "shuffle play test" reveals no filler and I too can't wait to see these songs performed live. Album of the year (so far!) for me. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars truly dreadful, 21 April 2010
I'm a big fan of Nyman's earlier work, and this is just awful. How this collaboration ever seemed like a good idea to anybody is beyond me, they must have been very very drunk indeed! an unfortunate present which will shortly be up for sale.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality case, 8 July 2009
Unfortunately I cannot recommend this case, mine has already broken due to the poor quality of the materials used and the low standard of manufacture. When in the case, the camera is very difficult to operate. This is a shame because if these points were improved it would be a good case for a phone that is difficult to protect due to the sliding camera cover. The case snaps together around the phone, unfortunately the clasps are very weak and exposed and easily break off. The rubber coating also peels off with minimum careful use. The screen protector is very cheap plastic and is not scratch resistant. Very disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent album, 4 Dec 2007
I purchased this after Katia B was mentioned in a Songlines magazine article on Brasilian music, and I am so glad that I did. This cd fuses elements of trip-hop with Brasilian music, excellent production and Katia's beautiful vocals to produce a really fresh and confident sound. Her voice in English and Portuguese is sublime. If you are into Bebel Gilberto, you will love this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great resource, 15 May 2007
This is an excellent tool, if like me you are a graphic designer who uses process colour then this book is essential, combine with the Pantone reference swatches and your good to go. It gives you a clear example of what your screen colour actually is when printed, obviously this just a guide as paper and other factors will affect each job individually. I work in book publishing and its fair criticism that the book binding is not the best hence 4/5 rating, but if you are careful it should last ok. Store in a light proof bag/desk drawer to preserve the colour integrity as long as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent hand mixer, 15 May 2007
This is an excellent hand mixer, exspensive but you really do get what you pay for. The build quality is very high, and the retracting power cable is a really useful and plug locater is a nice touch. The motor is powerful and provides consistent mixing speeds, and not too noisy even on the higher settings, the hooks and whisk supplied work well. The mixer seems quite sturdy, (another reviewer noted that theres had broken after being dropped three times - I suppose it depends how high and what onto, my kenwood suffered a similar fate), and is comfortable to hold and use. I would recommend using with a good quality heavy bowl. Overall, a nicely designed product with excellent performance, made for use not just to look good, happy cooking!

5.0 out of 5 stars tunes excelentes, 5 Dec 2006
Great album, a heady - dense mix of modern Brasilian bossa, trip hop and electronica noodlings with the sublime vocals of this talented singer over great production. Sung in English and Portuguese, two languages that work so well together in music, the songs are strong enough even if you cannot understand the words. Laid back without being Lazy, this is a work of substance. If you don't know her previous work this is a progression form her first cd and ep, and would appeal to fans of diverse artists such as Bjork, Kate Bush, Maple Bee, David Sylvian and obviously Bebel Gilberto, and even mainstream artists like Morcheeba. If you like this, check out other Brasilian artists Celso Fonseca, Lenine, Robert Sa and the late great Suba. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars And also the trains, 27 Oct 2006
This review is from: Progress Reform (Audio CD)
A cut above the rest. Marrying the grandeur of todays post rock with yesterdays intelligent goth, (think of the criminally under rated And Also the Trees, or early Tindersticks/Crime & the City Solution), iLIKETRAINS Progress*Reform is excellent, epic and personal, drowning in pathos and a kitchen sink drama at the same time. Highly recommended, try and see them live if you get the chance.
