In all likelihood the best book on Shakespeare, 10 Mar 2011
Peter Ackroyd is a brilliant author who produces flawless prose, rich in content, structure and form. His biography of Shakespeare gives a detailed account of the socio-cultural and historical context in which Shakespeare grew from a child to the playwright and poet we know today as a hallmark of English literature. Although at times the detail is a bit much to digest, it all serves a purpose and Ackroyd masterfully demonstrates how it all contributed to Shakespeare's literary work. This biography can be of interest to both readers with academic or recreational interest in learning all about Shakespeare's life and work. The Independent rightfully called it 'the best book on Shakespeare that can be found'.
