Started well, but it didn't go all the way in fulfilling it's potential. I enjoyed it, I love a biblical apocalypse, but half way through it started to lose me. It was unclear what was going on, there were people being 'killed' but I was unsure if they were actually being 'saved' or just being slaughtered by monsters. The ending was really abrupt and unsatisfying too.

This is not everyone's cup of tea. Not every horror fan will enjoy it. Personally I've always been a fan of films that centre around an loner female protagonist that becomes unhinged. Films like May, Contracted, Eat, Thanatomorphose, Devoured etc. This came in that category, its a bit different to the others in terms of story, but it satisfied my tastes. I found the protagonist to be a bit unlikeable, but relatable, which is a common thing I find with these sort of films, especially Contracted. I didn't relate to her dreams, but her desperation, and sense of isolation, and her rage. If you like these films then definitely get it, if you don't, I would recommend you start with a different film like May as this has some stylised sequences and odd scenes that may render the film ridiculous for someone who doesn't favour the story.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lacklustre and careless, 31 Aug. 2015
This review is from: Ouija [DVD] [2014] (DVD)
I'm surprised at the mixed reviews here. This film is unoriginal, not scary in the least, not even jumpy in my opinion, its also really really boring. Not much happens until the end, and by that point I didn't care. I didn't care about the story or the characters. I love horror, and this was the sort of film horror fans dislike. A cheap, mass produced, story by numbers that was churned out in minimal time, with minimal care to create a quick straight-to-dvd film to make a few quid.

Such a pile of rubbish. It doesn't record properly, and is so unresponsive. It takes about two seconds at least for it to respond to the buttons being pressed and gets stuck on fast forward frequently. My folks had this and got new one so I took ot , forgetting quite how bad it was then remembered why they got a new one after having this only a few months.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love indie cinema, 8 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I love indie cinema, and I love horror of all kinds. But mostly I love stories, and this was clearly done by someone who loves telling stories that play with well known themes but from a different perspective. This is just the kind of film I would make if I were to make a film. Its understated and modest, but creepy and really effective with the makeup to really push the body horror theme.

Simply had to counter the one star rating as I loved this film and can't understand someone hating it so much. Obviously everyone has their own tastes but I genuinely believe that this film will appeal to most horror fans. I prefer a lot of indie horror but I reckon it woould be popular with mainstream horror fans too. The acting of the leading lady really makes this film. I saw it at fright fest and it seemed to be well received.

2.0 out of 5 stars watch for the comedy value, 24 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Ice Queen [DVD] (DVD)
I have seen a lot of films, and I think this may actually be the worst film I have ever seen. The acting is so bad, I suspect the acters are really pornstars, the makeup is diabolical and the dialogue is embarrassing. The reason I have it two stars is because I got drunk with my mum and she told me we had to watch it because it was so bad, so we watched it and laughed through the whole thing, it was a riot. Even worse than sharknado. Yes, apparently that was possible!

5.0 out of 5 stars loved the aliens, 23 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Attack The Block [DVD] (DVD)
I really liked this film, the characters are horrible hoodies, but although they're not 'likeable' they are apealing in the way that they converse with each other, and there are brief glimpses into their home lives that wasn't sympathetic to them, quite the opposite, but that, along with their 'character developement' and the very fact that they are not the usual main characters for such a story, made the film interesting and a bit different.

The story was simple, it was more about the characters, and the monsters were not state of the art CGI, which made them more tangible and sinister, I do think CGI is overused so it was nice to see men in suits, but it was well done, in that the monsters were so incredibly dark that you couldn't see any features except for the gapping blue jaws. The darkness of them was a good blag, and I think it was very effective. I know alot of people think the aliens were cheap and silly, but in my opinion, CGI aliens just aren't as effective because you can see that they are animations.

The film was quite short, (1hr 20mins) but it was quite fast paced, had alot of energy, and the gore effects were quite good, not too over the top, but a couple of gross bits.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating yet perhaps a little too brief in places., 4 July 2011
This review is from: Cosmos Close-Up (Hardcover)
I got this book after reading a small review of it in Focus Magazine, and I have to say that I'm pretty pleased I did.

It is a nice looking book, and it has some lovely images, some very familiar, others not. On every double page, one page is a full size picture of something (eg Jupiter) and on the opposite there is a short description of the planet, below that there is a smaller picture of a close-up image of the planet, and then a further explanation as to what you are being shown. There are some lovely facts in there, some notes assume the reader to have more pre-knowledge of the planet/nebula and other notes I felt were a bit too brief and I was left wanting to know more, but that's ok, the book isn't an in-depth description of everything, but it does offer some intersting facts that I didn't know.

The first part of the book focuses on our solar system, it looks at the moon, the sun, some planets (venus, jupiter and saturn among them) and a few moons, particualrly that of jupiter and saturn. It then expands and looks at a few nebulae like the famous Eagle Nebula and zooms into several focal points such as 'the pillars of creation' and explains that it is believed that stars are being created. It also gives dimensions of the cloe-ups which is really interesting.

It also looks at galaxies and stars. One interesting page is an image of a star being born, it explains that the event is billions of years old, and also shows a picture of the 'light echoes' of the star reflecting off the inter-stellar medium which reached our view after the initial burst and the image is ghostly and very fascinatinng.

I don't know how this book compares with others such as the Hubble image book, but I went with this one and I'm very happy. There are some images that I hoped to have seen but I think it gives a good cross section of what scientist observe from their telescopes and I am pleased with this purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars waste of time, 4 July 2011
This review is from: Primal [DVD] (DVD)
I watch alot of off-beat films, and I've seen a fair few Australian films, and generally speaking, the Aussies have a pretty cool collection of horror films, from slashers like Wolf Creek, to psycho-chillers like The Loved Ones (great film by the way), but this film was definitely not keeping up the trend.

The general story is not bad, it had potential but they really let themselves down. It started off as a serious film, there were alot of typical story-telling devices that were a bit over the top, for example there's a conversation between the main character and another that reveals she is recovering from the trauma of being held in a basement by her ex-boyfriend. It served as way of showing her to be a potential survivor and that the events that were to unfold would be her opportunity to show her strength, but it was a little over-dramatic as a backstory.
There were also many 'why would they do that?'s and 'she wouldn't say that's which drive me insane.

It was predicable in it's formulaic structure, but then it suddenly turned from a serious film, into a crappy b-movie that was trying to be 'so bad it's good'. It felt like half way through the film, the writers and director realised what a rubbish film it was and so turned it into a different direction hoping they could make the crap acceptable.

It was just bad, it was way too over the top and there was alot of really long tedious shots and flashing between scenes that dragged out without showing anything productive.
The last scene was this really stupid 'rape' scene (if you can call it that) that was so dumb.
Basically, I really feel like it was a waste of time. The single star I gave it is purely for the potential that the story had, it's just a shame that these guys had no idea what to do with it.
