5.0 out of 5 stars A splendid collection, 30 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Keynote recorded during the period immediately preceding the bebop revolution and this collection represents the mature swing era in its flowering. It is full of quality performances by well assembled groups and benefits from very good recording, no doubt assisted by Fresh Sound's expert remastering. A panoply of jazz stars is featured (study the list) and it is hard to imagine that anyone who buys this set will be disappointed. Many congratulations to Fresh Sound for putting this together. Invaluable!

4.0 out of 5 stars Art Farmer - 7 albums, 5 Aug 2013
I haven't bought this set because I have copies of the original issues of all of the albums. Musically I think the set to be particularly good , and assuming the perfectly good sound quality of the originals has been maintained, then it represents excellent value.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine portrait of a fine pianist, 13 April 2013

Told me all I wanted to know about this British/American resident pianist, both personally and musically, and benefitting from being very well written. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Keith Nichols, 13 April 2013

This review is from: Jazz at Boisdale (Audio CD)
The Boisdale Blue Rhythm Band on this CD, an eight-piece, was organised for the eponymous London West End restaurant by pianist/arranger/skilled recreationist Keith Nichols, and is up to the very high standard of his well known Stomp Off recordings in similar vein - so highly recommended. It also benefits from being well recorded.

I entirely agree with the other reviewers: a stunning album of great originality, performed with panache. Quite why no one has managed to resisssue it remains a mystery, leading to the rather ludicrous prices being asked for copies now. See Amazon!

4.0 out of 5 stars Blossom blossoms, 8 Jun 2011
If you like Blossom Dearie's distinctive singing style you will not be disappointed by this fine live album; and the resident club bassist and drummer provide very sympathetic accompaniment

3.0 out of 5 stars A fine band, 8 Jun 2011

I doubt if anyone familiar with Wilber and Davern would be disappointed by this album, but the Summit, although truly a talented bunch, can begin to sound a bit routine.

4.0 out of 5 stars British jazz on live form, 8 Jun 2011

This CD is in two parts. The first, which is particularly good, is the Lyttelton band in one of its finest configurations, and since so much of its recorded output of this period is not avaialable on CD (da Music could do much, much better with the Black Lion catalogue than it has so far) this lively session is especially welcome. The second part, Digby Fairweather's band, is only a little behind in quality.

Walton demonstrates what a fine pianist he is, and the Strayhorn repertory in his hands once again shows its enduring qualities.

4.0 out of 5 stars A couple of old masters, 8 Jun 2011

A thoroughly pleasant session by two of the greatest talents in jazz, but don't expect any surprises; it would be an exaggeration to say thet either was particularly fired up for the occasion.
