1.0 out of 5 stars Dull and plodding, 18 Jun. 2015
A dull, plodding book full of middle class angst. Struggled to finish this, clearly some people have enjoyed it. A relief to get to the end.

2.0 out of 5 stars The weakest JJ Cale album, 24 May 2015

Sadly, teaming up with Eric Clapton does JJ Cale no favours. Of all of JJ Cale's output this is the weakest. Pedestrian songs. No doubt sold a lot more (and gained JJ Cale a lot of royalties) on the back of Clapton's patronage. The rest of JJ Cale's output is far better - consistently good, apart from this one.

I'm glad I'm not alone here - this is a tedious book with little literary merit. I've given it 150 pages and given up, read the other one star reviews for more insight into how boring this book actually is. Shortlisted for the Booker? Desperate times......

2.0 out of 5 stars Tedious, 9 Jan. 2015
This review is from: Under The Skin (Paperback)
A female driver picks up muscular male hitch hikers in Scotland in Winter - wearing T shirts, honestly? In the cold? Stilted, contrived conversation ensues. There was a description I recall of something looking like 'cultures on a microscope slide'. Any scientist will tell you cultures are grown on Petri dishes. I got bored and gave up half way, not believable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, 8 Jun. 2014
This review is from: Ride Out The Dark (Audio CD)
A blisteringly great album - this band deserve to go places - the guitar work is reminiscent of Richard Thompson's work with Fairport Convention - and praise can't come higher than this. Despite the guitarist's evident talent, it's not intrusive and sounds especially gorgeous on 'Canary Island' - a track I heard on an Uncut sampler - and got me into the band. Lovely female vocalist. Let's hope they tour the UK soon.

This is the best documentary I've seen. Some are very strong visually, but the narrative is often sadly lacking. Not this one. Enthusiastic avuncular presenter and a story told will clarity and conviction.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have read, 15 Mar. 2014
Others have said plenty about this book - great characterisation and plot. I've read some on Matthew Kneale's other fiction - this is certainly his pinnacle.

2.0 out of 5 stars Overlong and a plot that is just not credible., 15 Mar. 2014
I've enjoyed other Nesbo books - this one has a flimsy plot and hardly credible. A weak motive to commit multiple murders, and even if you can believe the reasoning, the murders are unnecessarily gruesome, and it all seems rather gratuitous.
