5.0 out of 5 stars "Tantalizingly brilliant... again!", 8 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: A Psychedelic Symphony (Audio CD)
The Church continue to amaze me with their freshness and originality. Rather than go through the motions of another live album, they have injected new life into old and new songs such that it sounds like a brand new collection of music. From the wonderful orchestral waves of Metropolis to the dazzling Tantalized, I just wish I had been there to see one of Australia's greatest bands turn on the magic. I have been lucky enough to see them live a few times, mainly in their 1980's "heyday" back in OZ but this is just live music on another level. Unlike most bands from the late 70's, The Church just seems to be getting better and better like a mighty fine wine. Kilbey and co still to this day carry the torch for the unsung great Australian song-writing bands such as The Triffids and The Go Betweens and I can't recommend this cd enough - it is just awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the very best Nordic Noirs, 25 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have seen all the Nordic Noirs and this stands out as one of the very best. The stories are brilliantly dark and innovative but it is the characters that make this series so enthralling. Each one is so believable and each individual in the team is as interesting as the plots. Over the series you really get to know and understand every character. And whilst I hate the way American programmes leave poor plots up in the air at the end of a series, in this case it really works and you are left begging for a new series just to see what is going to happen with the team. It works so well because the cast in this case is so strong and likeable for all their faults and troubles. The way that the characters become integral to how the cases are resolved is genius and a reflection of just how good the writing is. This series should not just be watched because it's another Nordic Noir - Arne Dahl stands out in its own right as a brilliant crime drama, well written and incredibly well cast. Can't wait for the new series!

1.0 out of 5 stars Jools Holland has officially disappeared up his own ..., 3 Dec. 2012
What made some of these songs great originally was their freshness and the absolute stars who sang them. What makes this cd so disappointing is the complete lack of freshness and the complete lack of star quality. Not even Florence can save her track. We have all heard better versions - track 1 is poor, track 2 is rambling nonsense, track 3 is sloppy and boring, track 4 is indulgent, track 5 sent me to sleep, track 7 is just a bad version, track 9 will never be bettered from Billie Holidays triumph, and it just gets worse until the finale when Jools Holland finally disappears up his own self importance on a dreadful version of "When you're Smiling". How the likes of Tom Jones and Paul Weller got involved in such an awful project alongside the likes of Mick Hucknall and Jessie J is beyond comprehension. This really is the final straw as far as Jools Holland having any musical credibility. If you fancy a bit of re-hashed dross for christmas, you won't find anything as bad as this.

1.0 out of 5 stars Laughable, 3 Nov. 2012
This review is from: Candy -2tr- (Audio CD)
According to his own PR on this website for which Amazon takes no responsibility for, Robbie Williams is "easily" the biggest selling UK male solo artist in history. How this equates with reality (it's a big fat lie) - David Bowie, Elton John etc.. typifies his own grasp of what is and isn't good music. Just as he is delusional about his own place in history, Candy demosntrates just how weirdly out of touch he is with what is a good song. To say it's poor is an understatement. And he has finally been revealed as the guy from "Take That" who couldn't sing (beautifully mentioned by a Spice Girl on national TV). Candy demonstrates this inability to hold a tune even better than the rubbish he knocked out on the last Take That cd. I get the feeling that Gary Barlow is subtley getting back at Williams for all the nastiness in the 1990's - why else would he write such an appalling song and give it to Williams. If only there was a no star option on this assessment....

1.0 out of 5 stars Did someone leave the tape running from the first cd?, 12 Oct. 2012
This review is from: Babel (Audio CD)
Unfortunately I spent too much time in an Irish Pub over the weekend whose staff decided to play this cd on a loop. The first playing I actually thought it was their first cd as it really does sound like the offcuts from what was a pretty average collection of songs. But from the opening bars of "Babel" to "Not with Haste", this cd is a blur of contrived folk nonsense. It's more marketing than music. After 3 loops I just hated the music and warned the pub that 14 gentlemen would sue them for bleeding ears if it stayed on a loop.
But seriously, its twee, its manufactured, it actually sounds like four lads have got together after a few beers, changed a few chords from their debut cd, engineered the music to sound a little bit alive, and marketed a rehash as the "in thing". It's hilarious but it will probably sell in bucket loads despite being as dreary and interesting as Kate Melua's last offering. Soon to be at £1.00 in a Charity Shop near you. Definately not in the same league as "The Band" despite the similar look.

2.0 out of 5 stars More Bombastic Nonsense, 1 Oct. 2012
This review is from: The 2nd Law (Audio CD)
You buy one Muse cd and you have pretty much bought them all. They appeal to a certain listener and have repeated the tired old formula time and time again. This is shameful stuff and this whole cd, even with some redeeming moments, is lazy stuff at best. Really tired of the bombastic rock, try some tunes please.

Fantastic music from the 1970's that has stood the test of time. As good as the best of Tangerine Dream and certainly more interesting than the hippity hoppity R&B nonsense of today. And thanks for supplier for meeting the order on time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius, one of best shows ever!, 6 Mar. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Scary, intelligent, brutal at times, psychologically disturbing. This is what the TV was invented for. Callan is British drama at its very best and Edward Woodward is menacingly brilliant, as are the rest of the characters. There has never been another programme like it and I doubt there ever will be.
