4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I expected!, 15 Dec. 2012
This book does not look like much, but it turned out to be a very nicely written information package for anyone who has given a home to an adult dog. Please don't think that this is only about dogs who have tragically traumatic past, it is useful for all dogs that have changed home as adults. The book has good checklists for stress symptoms and other important issues and gives great suggestions for problem situations. The only minus comes from the rather dull look of the book. There are no pictures and some people might think it's difficult to read. Using highlighters helps a lot! This book would certainly deserve a re-print with more pictures!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not suitable for any living creatures - please do not torture animals, 10 April 2012
A bowl like this is good for serving salads or drinks. However, it too small to be a home for most living creatures. Triops maybe, or some aquatic snails or maybe it could be used as a tiny greenhouse for plants. A tank this small is not enough for fish, it does not have filtering and the round, transparent shape is stressful for the fish. If you're interested in aquariums, please buy a good aquarium book first and learn what you need to do in order to keep aquatic animals as pets. Then buy a proper aquarium with filtering, lights, heater and living plants. For a tank smaller than 20 litres, only one fish is possible - the siamese fighting fish. However, it is possible to keep other interesting critters, such as shrimps in a small container. Please find proper information on aquarium keeping, especially if you're planning to buy pets for children. Teaching children to torture animals is irresponsible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poultry supermodels in display!, 17 Sept. 2011
Pictures are the best thing about the book: they're big and mostly taken at the studio. Nice portraits of beautiful birds, real supermodels of their breeds indeed. The amount of poultry breeds and species is impressive: over 120 chicken breeds and around 20 of ducks, geese and turkeys each. In addition to these guinea fowl, peacocks, emus, quails and other rarer birds have been included. The text mostly gives the basic information (weight, coloring and other statistics) but there are some interesting tidbits on history of each breed or species as well. I also liked the introduction to bird colors and basic genetics. On the minus side it must be mentioned that it is an American book for American audience. It is also specifically breed book - there's no information on poultry keeping as such. However, it is a nice "coffee table book" for any poultry enthusiast. It might not be the most informative poultry book but the pictures are nice to look at. Over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect!, 14 May 2011
I just recently got Faeries as well, and it seems that all the little "flaws" I noticed in that one were definitely fixed in this one! Good Faeries/Bad Faeries is a breathtaking guide to the faerie world, not just by old stories but through personal experience. I was also happily surprised to see how Froud had included non-British fairies as well. As a Finnish reader I was excited to see our little para creature pictured in the book! And I agree with Mr. Froud, that's most certainly how para looks like! It was also great to see pictures of the Faerie Oracle in larger size. There were so many tiny details that I hadn't even noticed in the oracle. Also, I got much better insight on the faeries of the oracle deck. It almost feels like we have the Holy Trinity of the Faerie here: Faeries, Good/Bad faeries and the Oracle. If these don't open the doors to the magic realms then nothing will!

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read for Faerie friends!, 11 May 2011
This review is from: Faeries (Hardcover)
If there's one book all people should read about Faeries it is certainly this one. It is also highly recommendable for children (+7 years maybe). It is a realistic and detailed guide book on Faeries and their history, including good amount of warnings of inappropriate treatment of Fae Folk. Don't be concerned if you've read reviews mentioning material unsuitable for children. If these kind of pictures harm children, then children cannot go to any art museum or read anything about world history at all. Seeing a couple of nipples or bottoms doesn't traumatize children. Some pictures are scary - and that's what they're supposed to be! Some Faery Folks ARE scary! Showing children pictures of cute little Tinkerbells is same than showing them cute pictures of tiger cubs and leaving out all material on how the tigers get their food. When Faeries are concerned, it is very important that children understand that they are very real and should not be joked about. Also, they are not evil or demonic as church tends to teach but ancient companions of human beings, just living on a different dimension of life. The only "flaw" is that the book concentrates mostly on faerie from Great Britain and Ireland, and that many stories in the book are taken from source material. A serious student of Faeries reads the original books by Kirk and other experts as well but the book by Lee & Froud is nonetheless a joyful and inspiring book on our Fair neighbours.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting read for a Queen fan!, 24 Sept. 2009
This review is from: Mercury and Me (Paperback)
I've always wondered what kind of person Freddie Mercury really was. He didn't give very many interviews and most of those few are just spoken through the role of a rock star and not as a private person. Hutton's book is definitely closest look you can ever have on Freddie. It's only minus side is that it might be a bit too close look! Sometimes Hutton tells more than most people would probably like to know, but at the same time, his book is very open, honest and straightforward story of a true love story. Hutton is not a good writer as such, especially the first chapters feel very clumsy. However, this only adds the experience of sharing something beautiful and extraordinary, as if you were reading Hutton's personal diary. It would have been interesting to read more about Freddies opinions on things, comments on the world, views of other people rather than learning what kind of arguments happened between Hutton and Mercury around which concert or event. Yet, it is intriguing to remember certain concerts and Freddie's performance once you learn what actually happened backstage. Hutton's book is a wonderful tribute to Freddie, not as a rockstar but as a real person and a lover. I'm deeply grateful that Hutton wrote it, I hope the writing process helped him to relieve the pain of losing Freddie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Buddhism, 24 Sept. 2009
I'd recommend this to all people, who have not previously read Buddhist books but are facing troubled times in their lives. For them this might be groundbreaking read. However, if you are familiar with Buddhism, this does not really teach you much new. The anecdotes are quite repetitive, if you already know what the point of the chapter is, and long stories of author's personal life are a bit intimidating. Personal stories are a nice way to teach but less is more... He also refers to many other teachers and books. giving his own book a feel of an essay on Buddhist teachings more than an original view on them. However, the latter half of the book is more original and suggests many interesting practices for different difficult situations. Personally, I prefer Pema Chodron, her books have been very enlightening. However, if you consider buying a Buddhist book for someone who is not familiar with basic concepts, this would be a good choice! Ham so!
