5.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia rules, 18 Feb 2014

Wonderfully acted by all the cast, the film depicts with accuracy the lost world of small-town Texas of the time. The emotions of the teenagers and the adults ring utterly true.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful depiction of first love, 18 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although very much of its time-setting, a convincing depiction of first love. The sex scenes are unlikely to have gone so well (euphemism!) considering the age and naivety of the boys involved, but otherwise authentic for the 1940s or 1950s.

A reasonably fast moving thriller but no more than that. The writing is "naive" and too obviously the product of research, so a bit clunky for my taste. Somehow unconvincing, but probably a good read for those who demand no more than the usual twists of plot.

A splendidly written, well-researched portrait of our most important naval figure since Nelson. Brings the man to life very entertainingly.

5.0 out of 5 stars vintage comedy, 22 Dec 2009
This review is from: The Vital Spark [DVD] [1974] (DVD)
This is true humour, wonderfully acted by all the "crew" of the Vital Spark, with their contrasting characters and their ill-fated scheming. A reminder of a better time in our national life.

4.0 out of 5 stars A different slant, 6 July 2009
This book maintains the author's already very high standards, and is particularly important historically for its emphasis on the civilian experience of the battle for Normandy, a side of war so often ignored. The effect of warfare on soldiers is also given its due place alongside strategic and tactical and political events. Overall, a very fine achievement which brings the battle to life. What I missed was a more extensive summary of the reasons for the outcome of the struggle, reasons which are admittedly given throughout the text but perhaps need to be drawn together as a summation of the book.
