Excellent darkly comic tale of murderous cowboys in the wild west. If you enjoyed the coen brothers remake of True Grit, then you will probably enjoy this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars First Rate, 13 Sep 2010
This review is from: Sherlock: Series 1 [DVD] (DVD)
There were any number of ways in which this 're-imagining' of the Sherlock Holmes stories could have gone wrong. Principally, by transplanting the characters to modern-day London, and thus losing that foggy, murky Victorian atmosphere we associate with Holmes and Watson. Add to that the fact that Holmes himself is far from an easy character to play as he can easily become a cardboard cutout fleshed out with the familiar prescribed tics. Fortunately, this adaptation is great. It's full of clever touches (mobile phone messages pop up on screen like cartoon bubbles) it's witty and warm - Freemans weary, naturalistic everyman Watson counterbalancing Benedict Cumberbatch's asocial loner Holmes - and it doesn't lose sight of the convoluted plots to keep you hooked. Only three 90 minute episodes in this box-set, but I'm glad to say that there are more to follow in Autumn 2011.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantasmagorical, 7 July 2010
Like many people, I tend to judge a book by it's cover. That's why I picked up this particular book, never having heard of debut novelist Jonathan Barnes before. This is not always a good ploy of course, but in this case it proved to be a good call. This is a fantasy-thriller, set in Victorian England and featuring the escapades of a stage magician and his sidekick, the 8-foot-tall giant known as the Somnambulist, as they try to unravel a fiendish mystery which threatens the very existence of the city. Colourful and bizarre characters abound and the plot winds and spools nicely. This mixture of fantasy and adventure is not to everybody's taste of course, but I reckon it's one of the most impressive debut novels I've come across in a while.

On Writing
On Writing
by Stephen King

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining. Concise. Helpful., 2 April 2010
This review is from: On Writing (Paperback)
I came across 'On Writing' when it was recommended to me by the teacher of a Creative Writing course I was taking, (in fact King doesn't have too many nice things to say about these classes, but there you go).
The book is split into 3 parts: the first section is autobiographical and deals with Kings early years and the third gives a graphic account of the time he was struck by a car and almost killed. Both of these sections are entertaining in their own rights, but I guess a lot of people will be particularly interested in the middle section of the book, which concentrates on the mechanics of writing. There are no easy answers here, no shortcuts. Much like weight-loss programmes, people like to think there's an Easy Way to write a book, but King is quick to scotch this notion. He advises reading constantly and writing at least 1,000 words a day, among other things. But that's not to say that this book isn't worth buying. The advice here is straight-forward and to the point - cut down on your adverbs, don't use exclamation marks unless you really have to!! - and makes perfect sense. I certainly found it both helpful and entertaining, without lecturing or pretending to offer miracle cures.

Wallander - Series 2 [DVD]
Wallander - Series 2 [DVD]

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 18 Jan 2010
This review is from: Wallander - Series 2 [DVD] (DVD)
There are plenty of police dramas in the world already, but Wallander is a welcome addition to the canon. It is set in Sweden, and although it features an all-British cast the bleak rural Swedish landscape becomes a character in it's own right. Kenneth Branagh has won all the accolades going over the course of his career, but personally I've never seen him better. He creates a believable, battered centre to the stories featured and his performance alone is worth the price of this dvd. The plots develop slowly, engrossing and involving just the same. A fantastic series, one of the best new detective dramas to appear on British screens for some considerable time. I have never seen the Swedish version - some people swear that it's better, although I don't know whether that's to do with a kind of one-up-man-ship or not. What I can do is highly recommend the English version.

Grizzly Man [2005] [DVD]

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing, 12 Jan 2010
This review is from: Grizzly Man [2005] [DVD] (DVD)
This is a documentary, pieced together from footage taken by Timothy Treadwell, the 'grizzly man' and narrated by the director Herzog. It starts off going in one direction, but then takes an unexpected turn worthy of any thriller. It's a fascinating study of one man's obsession which gradually begins to take over his life. Don't be put off by the fact that this is a documentary, it's one of the best movies - in any genre - that you will come across.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slight but good fun, 12 Jan 2010
This review is from: Drillbit Taylor [DVD] (DVD)
I think that a movie critic feels almost obliged to pan this type of movie for reasons of professional credibility. In fact, it's a pretty enjoyable little romp which does pretty much what you'd expect from the trailers. Owen Wilson reprises his role as 'Owen Wilson', here playing a beach bum hired as a sort of bodyguard for some high school kids getting a hard time from the school bullies. It's all good fun and a perfectly decent way to pass an idle hour or so if there's nothing better on the box.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Happening, 12 Jan 2010
This review is from: The Happening [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
M.Night Shyamalan does not have a career trajectory, rather a straight line at a 45 degree angle, going downwards. His first movie was the fantastic 'Sixth Sense', followed by the slightly less excellent 'Unbreakable', 'Signs', 'The Village', and so on in ever-decreasing quality. And right down at the bottom, he comes up with 'The Happening'.
This is a quite astonishingly bad movie featuring people attempting to run away from air. Something in the air makes people want to kill themselves, an effect which can be reproduced by sitting through the length of this movie. On the plus side it's only 90 minutes long, on the negative side - everything else.
