4.0 out of 5 stars THE 1999 REMIX BRINGS GREAT IMPROVEMENT, 7 Dec. 2013
This review is from: Street-Legal (Audio CD)
I agree with many of the comments Street Legal has got to be his most underrated album especially the remix.Which brought a vast improvement to the original production,so make sure youre getting the remix version. Many of the the songs lyrically and melodically are far stronger than the SLOW TRAIN COMING album (which always seems to be rated higher)and the rest of which have come since(with possible exception of OH MERCY).Although i love dylans lyrics,I feel his tunes get overlooked by many people. For me this album has some great melodies( in vain ..senior..true love ETC )Yes STREET LEGAL is definately in my top six Dylan albums AND WELL WORTH HAVING!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Three and a half for Bob, 7 Dec. 2013
This review is from: Shot Of Love (Audio CD)
Always had a soft spot for this album.Always thought it was the strongest of the christian trilogy,(not just because the lyrics are not so overtly christian)and 2ND TO OH MERCY as his BEST ALBUM OF THE 80S.It was nice to hear at the time Bob sounding so powerful on songs like TROUBLE/PROPERTY OF JESUS/SHOT OF LOVE whilst showing he could still come up with strong melodies (HEART OF MINE/LENNY BRUCE/ EVERY GRAIN OF SAND/IN THE SUMMERTIME).It only gets Three and a half rating from me due to the rough edged production suiting some songs better than others(IT BENEFITS shot of love/property of jesus/summertime/trouble)Whilst LENNY BRUCE could have benefited from a production job similar to TO EVERY GRADE OF SAND**Indeed LENNY BRUCE/DEADMAN DEADMAN/GROOM STILL WAITING../HEART OF MINE/ WATERED DOWN LOVE(probably the weakest song here)all sound better in live performance during this period! .Consequently the songs mentioned are done a diservice by the production. Due to these problems I feel that this album cannot be rated above albums such as PLANET WAVES/STREET LEGAL(remix)but still worth having. One always thinks of songs recorded at the time but not included, I always thought LETS KEEP IT BETWEEN US for example should have been included, but thats typical of bob in the 80s leaving the best songs of his albums!!

This review is from: Help! (Audio CD)
Always felt this album has got a raw deal from critics. Its a great pop album with some outstanding songs which stand alongside The beatles greatest ever achievments (HELP!/ HIDE YOU'RE LOVE AWAY/TICKET TO RIDE/YESTERDAY). The rest of the album though a lacking the lyrical depth of the fore mentioned, still boast wonderful pop melodies. I wonder how many bands would like to have come up with tunes like THE NIGHT BEFORE/ANOTHER GIRL/ IVE JUST SEEN A FACE/ GOING TO LOSE THAT GIRL. The much maligned ITS ONLY LOVE is often cited as being lightweight lyrically ,that might be so but the beauty of its melody like much of the Album, has been criminally overlooked.

4.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT AND UNDER APPRECIATED LOU, 21 Nov. 2013
This review is from: Growing Up In Public (Audio CD)
The most underrated album In his body of work, for the life of me I cant understand why .Its a Brilliant personal Album articulate, funny and sad lyrically, musically varied rich and unsettling. Its the perfect marriage of music and lyric. So many outstanding songs (mine is probably SO ALONE and KEEP AWAY) I assumed growing up in public would be regarded as a classic Album by Lou Reed Fans I was sort of taken aback that its so underappreciated by critics on the sites and that the follow up THE BLUE MASK (while ok but surely no masterpiece) was the one to have.I Know musical taste is subjective but GROWING UP IN PUBLIC is to great to be simply dismissed and overlooked Its an Album that needs re-evaluation by fans and critics alike.

This review is from: New Sensations (Audio CD)
Im not saying its his best but for me its my favourite.I suppose it depends what you expect from a Lou Reed album. Ive always been more drawn to his more melodic side (going back to the V.U)then his more experimental work, consequently TRANSFORMER to me was his ultimate accessible masterpiece, with the fusion of lyrics to great melodies and catchy hooks.NEW SENSATIONS follows the same tradition it might not be his deepest work but its certainly his most catchiest & happiest with Reeds distinct vocals sweetened by the effective use of backup vocals throughout. Though the 80s production slightly dates things if you're into energetic catchy rousing songs full of joy and humour you wont be disappointed. The slower numbers are very strong melodically (WHAT BECOMES OF A LEGEND../TAKE ME TO THE SUN)While all the tracks have something to recommend them my personal favs are TURN TO ME/NEW SENSATIONS/ DOING THE THINGS../MY FRIEND GEORGE.Its a fine album dont be put off by other reviews Like TRANSFORMER it showcases brilliantly the melodic side of Lou Reeds talent

5.0 out of 5 stars His Most Complete work, 15 July 2013
This review is from: Blonde On Blonde (Audio CD)
Blonde On Blonde Is A Classic, full of great lyrics and catchy melodies. In this sense its Probably Dylan's most complete work in which his development as a composer as well as a lyricist comes to the fore. I love especially JUST LIKE A WOMAN/IWANT YOU for their beautiful melodies. RAINY DAY WOMAN & LEOPARD SKIN PILLBOX HAT for their great sense of fun and atmosphere captured by the great musicians who play brilliantly throughout. There are so many outstanding songs full of passion and power(ONE OF US MUST KNOW/MOST LIKELY YOU GO/SWEET MARIE/MEMPHIS BLUES)If I had to nitpick lightly I would say that VISIONS OF JOHANNA although a brilliant song is not my favourite version here (always prefered the live acoustic 1966 version)I always found the lead guitar a little intrusive, while 4TH TIME AROUND suffers as sounding a little rushed and the drumming a bit intrusive.I know Im being a little harsh here as there are no bad songs here, and Dylan throughout is in outstanding form vocally. The only two songs in which his voice sounds in need of a vocal warm up, and actually mars slightly my enjoyment are SAD EYED LADY OF THE LOWLANDS (A 11 minute epic which although possibly overlong, has a beautiful tune) & TEMPOARY LIKE ACHILIES (a moody smokie blues which has never been played live)
As Ive already stated I feel Its his greatest all round work, and a must for all fans.
