5.0 out of 5 stars the moral of the story is - You get what you need, not what you want., 4 Jun. 2015

I appreciate watching a film where, if they are going to portray a person as disabled, then they use a disabled actor for that role (where the storyline permits it) and they have done that here. It certainly makes the lead character Delicious D (played by Christopher Thornton) more believable as a paraplegic.

Apparently Christopher Thornton and Mark Ruffalo went to acting school together, which is how they ended up co-directing this film.

Some big names in here. Alongside Mark Ruffalo as the priest trying to help the homeless Delicious D off the streets, Juliette Lewis stars as Ariel (druggie band member trying to recruit Delicious D as a turntable-ist) and Orlando Bloom is the selfish, egotistical English lead singer of said band.

The story is basically that Delicious D is homeless and living in his car, with other down and outs. Father ? (cant remember his name!), runs a soup kitchen and is trying to help some of the lost souls using its services. One day Delicious D discovers that he can heal people just by laying his hands on them and Father ? uses his new powers to help bring money in via donations, which he hopes to use to build a new homeless shelter. Frustratingly, Delicious D's powers do not extend to healing himself, which causes him to question why he was given his powers and by whom.

At the same time, Delicious D is trying to get work as a turntable-ist with a band. They basically don't want him (apart from Ariel) until they realise that his healing powers can be used as a gimmick on stage to draw the crowds in.

The film has some further twists, but I won't spoil things for you by telling you what happens.

It's a good, but very strange and sometimes dark film. Well worth the watch if you want something different.

The only thing that peeves me is the fact that they have relegated the main character to the smallest picture on the cover of the DVD, making it look like Orlando Bloom is the main character. He is not! admittedly, disability is not a big mainstream selling point, but the main character IS disabled and his disability is a key part of the storyline, so for goodness sake, represent that accurately!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting perspective on life..., 7 May 2015

Tony's just your average American guy trying to earn a living by pursuing his passion in life - music.

The fact that he came from a childhood background of a troubled sibling, parental divorce and rough living conditions and then became a quadriplegic at a young age, makes the fact that he is Still your average American guy at the other end of it pretty impressive.

Here's a guy who's not always had it easy in life, but retains his 'glass half full' outlook on things.

He celebrates the things that should be celebrated - good looking women, good music, family ties, doing what you love. He appreciates the fact that he still has a cracking set of shoulders, despite the fact his injury has robbed him of most of his former athletic physique. He still loves women and women still love him. His love of music keeps him performing - singing when he can't play guitar anymore.

He makes you think about what it's possible to achieve if you put your mind to it, without preaching or being 'inspirational'. Like I say, he's just an everyday guy.

But he's an everyday guy with an interesting story to be told. I think you should read it for yourself...

I bought this for A.N.Other, but got to keep the digital download in my car.

It's okay...I suppose...he just has a love it or hate it voice. I hate it.

Not for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars A disjointed angel's voice, 23 Feb. 2015

These disjointed melodies shouldn't work, but somehow they do - the jarring segments drawn together by FKA Twigs' angelic voice, sometimes a single voice, sometimes recorded as a multiple harmony.

I really wanted to like the album. It was a struggle at first, trying to get my brain to make sense of it, but after a few repetitions, I grew to love it. And love it still. It's not music to dance too, you'd struggle to find a regular beat - but music to chill too...? You bet!

Try it and let your senses be challenged...

Some lovely harmonies and melodies.

A little slow in places, but if you like simple, de-constructed songs that are easy on your frazzled brain after a long day at work, this album will help you unwind.
