4.0 out of 5 stars Horrific Visions, 7 Nov 2013
This review is from: Marin's Dale (Kindle Edition)
Marin's Dale is an interesting novel (or novella) about the psychological impact of the unknown. I like the fact that the author doesn't fall into the crutch of typical zombies or the same repeated scripts. The enemy is, in many ways, very unique and the senses of this peaceful Colorado city, bordered by mountains, leaps into your mind.

I think the plot is more about the journey than the destination, and readers looking for a cookie-cutter plot that all comes together may be disappointed. That said, a very great and original story. It certainly creeped me out and got me thinking.

THREE SIPS OF GIN: MEMOIRS OF AN AFRICAN ADVENTURE. (SIGNED).
THREE SIPS OF GIN: MEMOIRS OF AN AFRICAN ADVENTURE. (SIGNED).
by Timothy G. Bax
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Bullet-ridden' with 'laugh-out-loud' humour!, 5 Nov 2013
One of the most uniquely insightful books on the Rhodesian Bush War I've ever had the pleasure to read. It's well written which in itself is refreshing these days, as is the author's consistently unassuming style. His ability to seduce the reader in becoming one with him, seeing everything unfold through his eyes, is uncanny. The energy, bravery and spirit of adventure with which the author portrays himself and his comrades-in-arms gives the word 'courage' a new meaning. The entire book is 'bullet-ridden' with 'laugh-out-loud' humour. It's inconceivable that the author actually survived to fight another day let alone write his memoirs! I've not yet finished reading it (I know when I do I'm going to miss this bedtime story), and when I have I will be back to complete this review. Everything else I have to do during the day has now become irritating as I can't wait to get back to 'my' Three Sips of Gin!!!
Right, I'm back.. and I'm not happy. Yes, you guessed it, the bottle is empty - I've finished my 'Three Sips of Gin'. Tim Bax you are an inspiration. Never will I again be able to have a Gin without it putting a smile on my face! This is, without a doubt, one of the most enthralling and exciting memoirs I've ever read! In fact it reads more like a novel. I've purposely not looked at any other reviews as I did not want to be influenced in any way and I certainly don't want to try to re-write this masterpiece other than to say the author has a remarkable ability to transport one back in time as if it were yesterday. If I were a film producer this book would certainly inspire me - definitely a movie in there somewhere! Tim Bax, thank you! You are greatly gifted and I'm very pleased to hear that you are writing another book. I, for one, can't wait to buy it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Whew, quite a read!!!!!!, 20 Oct 2013
Well, what can I say. This author leaves no punches unturned! She gets straight to the point. Her eroticism is more powerful than any hard porn clip. It is certainly compelling reading. This book is so hot you'll burn yourself!

Monkey on a Stick: Murder, Madness, and the Hare Krishnas
Monkey on a Stick: Murder, Madness, and the Hare Krishnas
by John Hubner
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A book every parent should read.. be warned, it's not just drugs you have to be concerned about!, 7 Oct 2013
An excellent 'window' into what is alleged to be a cult, so perfectly exposed in this non-fiction book. Their attempt at 'reform' is still wide open to abuse and a lot of 'hot-air' as far as I'm concerned, to try to gloss over their already tarnished reputation. They're also alleged to have amassed a fortune, their main objective apparently, eg they're reputed to be buying up castles all over Europe to convert into 'temples' obviously to attract/impress more followers/victims. It's an extremely lucrative 'business' with a 'pecking' order of note, their dominions, like ant colonies, doing all the work. I know, our son was one of them, recruited, luckily for us, for only three years (some disappear altogether from 6 to 45 years or never return.. it's frightening), and spent time away in an ashram in Mauritius. But the damage was already done and as a family we suffered immeasurably. Thanks to 'Monkey on a Stick' you will be able to enlighten your children and everyone you know for that matter, by learning what to look out for; the 'love-bombing'; how they 'steal' your children, not necessarily physically but mainly by 'high-jacking' their 'brain'; how no one ever 'joins' a cult.. you are almost ALWAYS 'recruited'; how intelligent university students are the most vulnerable although it can happen to anyone at any age; how they are past-masters at 'brainwashing'; how they will extract every last cent from you (all members or 'devotees' eagerly 'donate' large portions of their hard-earned income for the promise to be 'incarnated'/to come back as someone or something better or to even be elevated to a higher plane); how they 'rule' with fear and superstition; how they manipulate, even little children.. the list is endless.
And, by the way, they 'worship' Prabhapada, a really ugly looking Indian with huge wide rubber lips, their leader, who deserted his wife in India whom he 'married' when she was 11 years old (robbed of her childhood, her innocence/she wasn't even allowed to be a little girl), leaving her to bring up all his children while he travelled the world, starting on the innocent 'hippies', easy pliable prey, in the USA. This Krishna society make thousands of fibre-glass moulds, effigies of Prabhapada, that they 'bathe' in 'milk' every evening and drape with smelly marigold garlands.
Oh, and the chanting that all members and devotees are obliged to do every day, some 106 beads/chants (akin to an annoying, incessant, buzzing wasp), God knows how many times, will drive you insane. And that's only the tip of the ice-berg.. read on, there's murder, child molestation, deceit and deception on a grand scale, it's like a thriller.. except it's true. You won't put it down. And thank you to the wonderful authors. I only wish they'd write more to expose these hapless (already brainwashed) skin-head clowns-in-gowns for what they really are (although sadly, it's not their fault as they are the victims and often very sweet boys). You will have seen them, perhaps tried to 'avoid' them, prancing in the streets, jingling their childish tambourines, 'giving' away booklets, then pressing the poor unsuspecting passer-by for a 'donation'! Always (trained) to push for money - tax-free income for the society of course. Cheap labour! Check this out for starters: [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars By far the best story of bravery, courage and perseverance to come out of Zimbabwe, 6 Oct 2013
There have been many very good books written about the Rhodesian bush war but I believe Ben Freeth's shocking account of what happened to him and his family, their struggle, their courage, their suffering, the indignities they had to endure, the broken promises and their loss is so superbly documented, so heart-wrenchingly honest, it is as if one is standing right by his side. The only real losers are the perpetrators for they can only hang their heads in shame. The only criticism I might have had was that too much religion was bandied about but then I came to realise, all they had was God.. as the world looked the other way. And then I understood.
I strongly recommend this as a 'must read' for those who were there and more especially for those who were not.

When A Crocodile Eats the Sun

5.0 out of 5 stars A very human story.., 6 Oct 2013
Gives one a very good idea of how traumatic and depressing it was for Peter's family and families like Peter's. How hopeless, despairing and often frightening the situation was and still is. How the world stands by does nothing. A very human story, a story of destiny, the struggles and courage of those brave souls in the face of utter despair and hopelessness. Well portrayed and an easy read. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Winner for your kids!, 6 Oct 2013
Anna is a darling of children's writing. A little fun-filled poetic booklet to keep them amused on a rainy day! Questions and answers are not only educational but entertaining. An armchair tour of several capital cities will also increase their general knowledge. It's a work of love with colourful eye-catching illustrations. I hope the author will do several sequels - a 'safari' perhaps with questions and answers of wildlife and its habitat around the world. I wish learning could have been such fun in my day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to make you Laugh Out Loud!!!, 6 Oct 2013
This review is from: The Nylon Pirates (Kindle Edition)
This has got to be one of the funniest books I ever read! Brilliant prose, superbly orchestrated as only to be expected of the great Nicholas Monsarrat! But be warned.. a 'sea cruise' as you have experienced or can envisage will never be the same again! In fact your life will never be the same again! I would half expect such a deviously constructed plan of actions from a woman.. but from a man?! Well, it's quite alarming.. an eye-opener to say the least. All I can say is 'beware'! Terrorism comes in strange packages.. and this is the strangest!
