A classic in literature of course. Wonderful description (idealized!) of early Victorian village life, a good narrative and extremely perceptive insights into human nature by the omniscient narrator. (Read George Eliot's other novels).

Japanese Inn
Japanese Inn

Edition: Paperback
Price: 19.50

5.0 out of 5 stars Japanese Inn, 3 Sep 2011
This review is from: Japanese Inn (Paperback)
For anyone interested in the history and culture of Japan this book is both a 'must' and a delight.

In the form of a novel, it relates a series of fictional but historically likely events at an inn, the Minaguchi-ya, situated on one of the main thoroughfares in Edo Japan. It so entertainingly supplements what information the reader may already have from more factual books on the period.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather disappointed., 2 Jan 2011
Whilst this book is an excellent compendium of English Liturature, I was surprised to find that the quoted texts had (in the majority of cases) the English spelling turned into the American version. I would have thought that the complete authenticity of the texts would have been preserved. I found this to be sufficiently irritating to quite put me off the book as I was for ever mentally 'correcting'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prep. for studying History of Art, 8 Aug 2009
In my opinion, essential reading for anyone proposing to take any kind of formal study of the history of art. It also contains many useful and enlightening summaries of art movements and theories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Audio Book- Narrow Road To Interior and Hojoki, 29 Mar 2009
Two excellent readings of these Japanese classics.

Unfortunately, my laptop was unable to 'read' the background notes on CD2.
