5.0 out of 5 stars A BIOGRAPHY THAT'S NEVER BEEN BETTERED, 9 Mar. 2003
First published in 1956, Stewart Perowne's biography still has never been bettered. Taking us right into the mind of a man who is regarded as one of the great monsters of history, Perowne shows us the man behind the myth, a man who counted Augustus Caesar, Agrippa and Mark Antony as his friends and the infamous Cleopatra as his enemy.
Perowne examines in detail Herod's early life, his violent climb to power, his ten marriages and the intrigues and plotting among the members of his own family, which resulted in the executions of many of them, including several of his own sons. Herod's final years, when he was driven literally insane by the agony of his final illness, are examined in detail.
However, Herod is revealed as being no worse than any other monarch of his time, and a lot better than most! His famine relief, for example, has not been bettered to this day.The remains of much of his magnificent building projects, including his rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem, still exist today, and Perowne records them all in text and photographs.
I highly recommend this book to all scholars of the New Testament period.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE RETURN OF THE SON OF GOD?, 21 Feb. 2003

What would happen if Jesus came back tomorrow? Would you believe it? Would anybody?
This is the interesting theory put forward in ITV1's latest drama The Second Coming. When Manchester video shop worker Steve Baxter[Christopher Eccleston]suddenly realises that he is the Son of God after a drinking session he sets about proclaiming his message of a Third Testament that will either save or destroy mankind. But who will write it and how will it all end? Several miracles later and Steve has a worldwide following...but it doesn't go all his own way as he is opposed by devils and non-believers alike.
Strongly written by Russell T Davies [Queer As Folk],despite the charges of blasphemy at the time of its first tv showing, this is actually a thought provoking drama that attempts to answer some of the questions Christians and others have been asking themselves for the last two thousand years.
Highly recommended

5.0 out of 5 stars JESUS OF NAZARETH [1977], 18 Jan. 2003
This made for television version of the life of Jesus has never been bettered. Indeed, it is said that 'Jesus of Nazareth' is Pope John Paul II's favourite version of the Gospel story, sticking closely as it does to the Roman Catholic viewpoint concerning the key events from the life of Christ. With an international cast headed by Britain's Robert Powell as Jesus of Nazareth, and directed by Franco Zefirelli, this epic film will lift your spirits and encourage you to want to find out more about the life of Jesus Christ.

Included are the 'Dear Boss' letter as well as the infamous 'From Hell' letter sent with a piece of human kidney as well as various eye witness statements and other key documents.
