5.0 out of 5 stars Best presentation of the definitive Emma, 12 Oct 2013

I've seen other sturdy versions of Emma, but this is the first that has been totally engrossing. Romola Garai brings Emma to life like no one before. Merely watching her wonderfully expressive face reveals Emma's every innermost thought. Garai's Emma is a wounded bird fluttering in a gilded cage - motherless, devoted to her heart-broken father, forever dreaming of visiting the unattainable seaside. Jonny Lee Miller is perfect as the kindly but correct friend of the family who can be infuriated by Emma's thoughtless shenanigans but is warmed by her vivacity and innate kindness. Louise Dylan plays the hapless Harriet Smith with a wonderful comic flair, providing some of the most hilarious moments in the mini-series. Blake Ritson's Mr Elton is a superbly obsequious peacock. Every other significant character is sharply drawn and clearly bears the scars from the happenings depicted in the opening minutes of the mini-series. Never before has the claustrophobia of Emma's tiny universe been so palpable, or her final realisation of Mr Knightley's love so moving.

Bravo to the Spanish for mastering this title on Blu-Ray. Fabrics and furnishings look spectacular, as do architectural interiors and exteriors. Colour is excellent, with only a few very dim interior shots displaying grain. Menus are in Spanish, but its not too hard to ensure the English audio track is selected. The extra clarity is definitely worth the slight bother of the Spanish navigation.

This has to be the funniest and yet most deeply moving Emma ever. Romola Garai and her co-stars have so thoroughly inhabited their characters it's going to be a hard act to follow. For me, this ranks alongside Colin Firth's Pride and Prejudice. The Blu-ray presentation is the icing on the cake.

5.0 out of 5 stars Had to buy this set, 18 Nov 2012

I bought this DVD set simply because of the fond memories I had of these movies from my daughter's childhood.

The stories are about a group of quirky young dinosaurs who gently negotiate some real-life issues like bravery and loyalty through a series of boisterous adventures. The characters all have whimsical personalities and there are lots of witty songs - "Friends for dinner" is a classic. This series truly is family entertainment.

If you are looking for a gift for youngsters, you can't go wrong with this DVD set.

5.0 out of 5 stars Charming movie - outstanding Blu-ray, 18 Nov 2012

White Christmas is a classic feel-good Hollywood musical with typical romantic misunderstands, putting-on-a-show dramas and Irving Berlin musical interludes. Its perfect for getting into the Christmas spirit.

What sets this Blu-ray apart is the totally amazing transfer from VistaVision. The Technicolor is rich without being dream-like. The everyday scenes look glowing, while the colours in some of the musical numbers are positively eye-popping. The image is rock steady throughout, with incredible detail in fabrics and surface textures.

The overall effect is almost three dimensional. The actors are so life-like that I sometimes had the uncanny feeling that I was actually on location, peering over the cameraman's shoulder while the movie was being made.

Even if you've watched the movie on TV a dozen times, pop this Blu-ray into your player and you'll feel like you are seeing it for the first time ever.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic movie, nice booklet, average transfer, 17 Nov 2012

This review is from: The Uninvited [1944] [DVD] (DVD)
The Uninvited has to be one of the most deliciously creepy movies ever made and I've been eagerly looking forward to getting it on DVD. The colour booklet is interesting and the radio plays are a nice inclusion.

I was alarmed by the picture quality during the first minute or so of the movie, with quite a lot of speckling during the credits, and the scenes of rolling waves exhibiting a truly bizarre double-image stuttering. However the transfer subsequently settles down and varies between good and satisfactory. There are intermittent white specks that you know are there but never quite catch, and contrast is a bit lacking at times.

While the transfer quality may not be absolutely state-of-the-art, its not going to ruin your enjoyment of this fabulous movie. Plot, cast, dialogue, cinematography and music are all top notch.

If you enjoyed "The Ghostbreakers" or "A Place of One's Own", and like cliff-top houses with dark secrets, you're going to love this DVD.

I'm glad to have the DVD and the booklet, but have joined the ranks of those hankering for a really top-notch Blu-ray transfer.
