Almost a doomsday story of chemical calamity. Are we in the "real" world or in the fantasy of our heroine's demented mind. A story of corporate wrong doing that turns out to be about one evil man's twisted mind. Good yarn!

And so everyone learns who each other are. Our heroine faces the extreme trial of good against evil and wins. In the final analysis the tale is one with the old theme of a repeating cycle of events played out by a new set of characters. Secondly the end of our tale with a resolution for now with room for more episodes and a promise of a final solution in the future.

The author says that he enjoyed writing this book of the trilogy. It shows! The first book gave us an entry into this world and it's background. Book two adds more body to the narrative. This is helped by the fact that our young characters are growing up. A good yarn that is set to developers further.

It started ever so slowly seeming to go nowhere. A youth is protected by a kitchen maid after being dumped at her feet. It takes a while to set up the premise of the culture. But then baddie No. 1 turns up and things rapidly accelerate. Turns out to be a reasonable mystic medieval mystery with startling effects and consequences with, of course, a twist at the end.

This time our hero is out and about on his own and out of his comfort zone after being shot by his sidekick. The city boy is out in the country where everything is strange. This includes the people, the magic, and the dimension the bad guys actually live in. Without his disfigured sidekick he seems to be learning how to be a policeman and to deal with the dual role. Aaronovitch tells another good yarn of daring do or don't that keeps the reader glued to the page.

The narrative seemed slow to start. I spent a lot of time being introduced to new characters that popped out of the woodwork. Then I realised that this is book two in the series, and that was why I should have known more about what was going on. With that it makes sense, as does the way in which the action builds to a climax. The visualisation was good. Daemons never seen but always threatening. And finally the question of who are the good guys.

This has all the hallmarks for the basis of a film script. The tale starts with a set up of death in strange circumstances and then goes on to introduce our hero in mysterious circumstances. After that it's a matter of who can you trust and what's really going on. The climax starts with an unnatural disaster followed by a chase by car and aircraft to rescue the heroine. Good yarn.

Good action narrative on the go from word one. Lots of suggestions as to who's who, and who did what and why. It all works out at the end, but a thread from the beginning turns up at the last moment to mean that nobody is safe as yet. Good yarn.

Started incredibly slowly. At first it looked like our heroine was being really, really, stupid. Turned out just to be just a way of getting started and had noting to do with the narrative. The ramp up into the true story was gradual, with the real meat in the last quarter of the book. Only then did we see the expected style of the author.

No colour at all. This book is great material for Bond style film. It has a basic shape on which any special could be hung. It needs that to make it interesting. Totally predictable, no suspense, not thrilling.
