The narrative seemed slow to start. I spent a lot of time being introduced to new characters that popped out of the woodwork. Then I realised that this is book two in the series, and that was why I should have known more about what was going on. With that it makes sense, as does the way in which the action builds to a climax. The visualisation was good. Daemons never seen but always threatening. And finally the question of who are the good guys.

This has all the hallmarks for the basis of a film script. The tale starts with a set up of death in strange circumstances and then goes on to introduce our hero in mysterious circumstances. After that it's a matter of who can you trust and what's really going on. The climax starts with an unnatural disaster followed by a chase by car and aircraft to rescue the heroine. Good yarn.

Good action narrative on the go from word one. Lots of suggestions as to who's who, and who did what and why. It all works out at the end, but a thread from the beginning turns up at the last moment to mean that nobody is safe as yet. Good yarn.

Started incredibly slowly. At first it looked like our heroine was being really, really, stupid. Turned out just to be just a way of getting started and had noting to do with the narrative. The ramp up into the true story was gradual, with the real meat in the last quarter of the book. Only then did we see the expected style of the author.

No colour at all. This book is great material for Bond style film. It has a basic shape on which any special could be hung. It needs that to make it interesting. Totally predictable, no suspense, not thrilling.

The master has done it again! Never before has I read a book where the "hero" is sidelined for most of the narrative. This is a masterpiece that uses the supporting "good guys" and the protagonists to carry just about all of story. Could not put it down!

A good read, we'll written. The good guys get snared by the bad guys using quasi legal methods. The good guys get together and go after the men in high places. A good action yarn.

An interesting study of how two people deal with the death of a parent. From childhood one lives with a disturbed state of mind while he seeks his mother's murderer. A retired and recently dead executive's daughter finds copies of the files of an unsolved murder and, against her better judgement, becomes involved in solving the case. The find one another. But do they trust each other? Can they solve the case and come out the other side whole and unharmed? A new slant on detective fiction.

A good fast entry to the tale. Action moves on at a rapid pace. It is amazing that the time covered by the action is only about 8 hours. Totally believable.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Innocence of Father Brown, 5 Feb 2014

I remember Father Brown from my youth. The scenarios are still as clever, as are the solutions to each conundrum. Unfortunately the stories were written for a Victorian audience. Thus the pace is slower than we have come to expect, and the language has different usages and seems stilted.
