Nelson: A Dream of Glory
Nelson: A Dream of Glory
by Dr John Sugden
Edition: Paperback
Price: £15.90

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant, 28 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This could have been a boring, factual biography. It isn't. It is full of colourful descriptions of the period and sets Nelson in context. The importance of contacts, the hardships of life at sea and the singular dedication of the man are all laid out in a very readable and immensely informed narrative.

1.0 out of 5 stars RURAL MYTH, 12 Dec. 2011
This review is from: Walden (Hardcover)
I enjoy the countryside and spend my spare time working a small forest. It is a great pleasure and an escape from the noisy 21st century. Having seen so many references to "Walden" I thought it was about time to tackle this iconic text. I thought it was fraudulent. My expectations were a mixture of detailed observations and great philosophy. Learning that he wandered into the village every now and again was devastating, then his stay only lasted 3 years. This is not the writing of some perceptive rural philosopher but an exquisitly written arcadian story. Destination - the villlage fete.

4.0 out of 5 stars IMPORTANT BOOK, 12 Dec. 2011
Clearly the result of a very long period of research and accumulated knowledge. Extremely well written for a difficult topic with a huge amount of information about a country with a population of 180 million and growing. The authors many visits to Pakistan over an extended period of time give his views great credibility. The contrast between the West and Pakistan is nowhere better illustrated by the fact that this book was researched, written and produced int the West. The book gives an understanding of the country that can only be bettered by packing a suitcase, plodding dusty streets and spending many nights on infested mattresses. Even then you would not get such a broad picture of a strategically important land quivering on the edge of instablility. It took a while to read but the benefit is a much deeper understanding of the geopolitics of the whole region and it's relevance to our daily lives.

My only niggles were the occassional, unnecessary, comparisons with India - and the very big ommission of any maps.

The author repeatedly points out that Pakistan is not basket case but the facts are not supportive.

Great book.

Very thoughtfully structured. Extremely clearly written. Absolutely essential reading for any private investor. The most rewarding of the dozen or so post crisis books I have read.

The manual overide which goes back to the programmed sequence automatically has saved us a fortune as the immersion no longer stays on once the water has heated up. Could not find this item locally, thank you Amazon.

The time came to replace our 15 year old Sharp photocopier. The Canon is brilliant. Easy to set up, straight forward to operate and so far (6 months) totally reliable. Very pleased,

1.0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTED, 30 Dec. 2010
I bought this bought because it was reviewed in the Financial Times. My expectations were high as it is not related to financial issues. If you want to read how behavioural psychologists stimulate rats to swim for 60 hours before they drown or how dogs can be electrically shocked into submission this is the book for you. Much of the text is annecdotal, there is no big picture here about the process of choosing.

I made a poor choice.
