4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Addition for Collectors, 25 Sept. 2015

Collected from a run of shows performed by 3/5 of the original line up.

Showcases the song writing and guitar playing of the late Randy California, with support from his step father the late Ed Cassidy on drums and bass player Mark Andes.

Although selections from these shows have been issued as part of an earlier multi CD set, fans of the group, collectors and complete-ists will want this.

Recording quality is decent given its vintage and some of the playing is inspired.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Reference Aid, 25 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A re-print of an old book, originally published in 1809 I believe.

The information contained within is up to this date and I am not sure how easy and costly it would be to obtain an original copy, so this issue does the job for me.

Anyone who purchases this book would do so as reference aid. In its time it was a major undertaking and the information contained within may have been lost had it not been collated and published in this manner.

It does what it says on the cover!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Change in Direction, 18 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Thunder And Lightning (Audio CD)
Perhaps it was inevitable that Thin Lizzy would seek a new direction following the departure of Snowy White. At the time of its release "Thunder and Lightning" was regarded as a bit of a return to form, with a more direct "in your face" approach.

John Sykes made a big difference to the live dynamic of the band and it is a shame that there wasn't another studio release by this line-up.

The tracks I enjoyed on the LP are "This is the One", "Holy War", "Cold Sweat", "Bad Habits" and "Baby Please Don`t Go". "The Sun Goes Down" was regarded as a stand out moment (particularly live) although I can take it or leave it and the title track.................well you have to be in the mood in my opinion!

There is some filler on the LP and I am not a great fan of the overall sound. I don't find Sykes' busy playing as attractive of that Snowy`s on studio releases.

I like the inclusion of the demo tracks, which is one of the major plus points in the "deluxe edition" re-issue series and given the way Phil used to play around with lyrics and arrangements can be illuminating!

My pet moan here is the inclusion of the live tracks from 1981. I know that some of these were used in the bonus disc when the LP was first released, but this was the time to get it right. They were recorded on the "Renegade" tour with Snowy White and should have been attached to "Renegade". Surely there was enough material from the "Thunder & Lightning" tour that could have been used on this release, from B sides, BBC in Concert (Reading), DVD soundtrack and LIVE/LIFE recordings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Release that has aged well, 18 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Renegade (Audio CD)
Renegade has a number of tracks up to standard, "Angel of Death", "Pressure will Blow", "Hollywood" and the title track. It includes interesting stuff like "Fats" and a bit of filler, but this re-issue includes the (rather average) single "Trouble Boys" and its superb moody "B" side "Memory Pain", dominated by Snowy White's guitar solo, which is a major plus.

The influence of Darren Wharton's keyboards can be felt on a couple of tracks, particularly "Angel of Death", which opened the set when the album was toured.

In my opinion it has aged well in comparison to the record that followed it and would surely have benefitted from the "live" BBC in Concert disc recorded on the "Renegade" Tour and for some reason attached to "Thunder & Lightning".

I am a Lizzy fan, so my rating reflects this. Not the greatest LP they did, but solid with a number of high points.
