Dissolution (The Shardlake Series)
Dissolution (The Shardlake Series)
by C. J. Sansom
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.29

4.0 out of 5 stars A satisfying read - but a lawyer as a hero?, 15 Dec 2014
I really enjoyed the historical detail in this novel - it seems to have been thoroughly researched and brings the period to life. You get an excellent picture of the corruption at the court of Henry VIII and the way people lived at the time. The actual murder seemed to be of secondary importance to the depiction of life at the monastery and the background to the religious reforms, but I suspect the author didn't set out to write a typical detective story. My main gripe is that I didn't find the central character, Matthew Shardlake, at all likeable. He treats his assistant, Mark, appallingly, is rude and self-pitying, presses his unwelcome attentions on the girl Alice, and fails to see through the duplicitous Cromwell until presented with irrefutable evidence. Typical lawyer in fact.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read, 31 Oct 2014

Very good for a first novel. Hugh is a likeable character with a sense of humour and awareness of his own limitations. I was not bothered about the author's attempts to reproduce the peasants' speech - after all, nobody really knows how people spoke in the 14th century and it would have been unintelligible to us anyway. I would have liked a bit more historical detail - Ellis Peters and Ariana Franklin do this so well and it gives added interest to their novels. I'm looking forward to reading book 2.

3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't include audio clips, 28 Oct 2014

Nothing wrong with the book, but don't be fooled by the words "DVD pack" - it doesn't include the audio clips so you need to buy the audio CDs as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book - closer to Advanced than Upper Intermediate, 28 Oct 2014
I have just started using this book with two fairly advanced students and they love it. The materials are interesting and motivating and the video clips make it much more engaging than just audio materials. I'm glad I started with the Upper Intermediate book - it's quite challenging!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book but more suitable for groups than one-to-one, 28 Oct 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Excellent book, and the DVD contains all the audio material plus extra video clips (though there aren't any associated exercises as far as I can see). This book seems to be slightly easier than Speak Out Upper Intermediate and is more geared towards group classes, whereas I use Speak Out successfully for one-to-one lessons.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth buying - but don't follow it blindly, 28 Oct 2014
A useful book, with all the audio scripts, teaching notes together with timings (good idea!) and suggestions for extra activities. However, it isn't an "idiot's guide" - the teacher does need to have a fair amount of international business knowledge. For example, in the first audio exercise a woman working for a Swedish company welcomes a German business partner and immediately uses his first name. The books says this is acceptable - well, it might be in Sweden, but it certainly isn't in Germany. It would be much better to suggest that the woman says "Welcome, Herr Ervald. May I call you Klaus?". The book then goes on to comment that there isn't much small talk in this conversation - again, this would be normal in Germany. For this reason I am only giving the book four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Does what it says on the tin!, 3 Oct 2014
A company quoted me £170 for cleaning our downstairs carpets - more than the cost of this handy machine. A bit fiddly to assemble, but then very easy to use. Two containers full did the lounge, another one the hall, and there's just the dining room to do. Moving the furniture took much longer than cleaning the carpets! The worst patches needed going over 2 or 3 times, but are now pretty clean. The carpet isn't too wet and should be dry in a couple of hours. The machine has paid for itself in one afternoon!

2.0 out of 5 stars Missing audio files, 3 Oct 2014

Good material but the DVD only contains a few of the audio files. I guess OUP want you to buy the Class Audio CDs, which are prohibitively expensive. I recommend you buy Cutting Edge or Speak Out (both published by Pearson) which have everything you need in one package and are much better value.

Speakout Intermediate Teacher's Book
Speakout Intermediate Teacher's Book

Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Does not include everything the teacher needs, 11 July 2014
The teacher's book says "Everything the teacher needs....". However, it does not include the material from the student's book, so you need to buy that as well. Also missing is the CD for the tests, so you can't actually use the listening and pronunciation tests - you need to buy the Class Audio CDs, which are very expensive. The description therefore, in my view, contravenes the Trades Descriptions Act.

Having said that, the teaching notes and photocopiable activities are very good, though not worth the price of the book.
