Blood and Famine (Man of Conflict Series, Book 4)
Blood and Famine (Man of Conflict Series, Book 4)
Price: £3.49

4.0 out of 5 stars A detached tale, 14 Jun. 2016

Septimus and his regiment are detached from Wellington's main army and I felt this was reflected in the story. It lacked the usual energy and pace I associate with the Man of Conflict series. However, I still enjoyed it.

A bad man makes bad decisions, one after the other. Not a good read. I bought on the strength of the author's previous works.

Not as good as the first novel but still very acceptable. The stereotypical portrayal of an Ulsterman grates as ever. Does Jeremy Corbyn gave courses on writing novels? The Frrnch dimension works ok and the end of the novel makes a worrying link with the first story. This saga has I hope some way to run

I was cynical about the foreword by Lord Boyce but guess what, the book is exactly as he described it. I suspect it is a very accurate fictional recreation of life in the Submarine Service. In addition it is a good yarn and the leading character has real potential. I look forward to his saga developing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!, 25 Dec. 2015

Outstanding. This book and its predecessor (Worth their colours) introduce a new regiment of heroes. A real story of men and women placed in the Napoleonic wars. I hope this is a saga which will continue until Waterloo. Better than Sharpe and more multi-layered than Hornblower. A great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another good yarn!, 11 Dec. 2015

Not Hornblower but a reasonable substitute. Sir Frederick is a good hero and the wider social history elements work well. Now Mr Wareham just has to embrace all loyal British heroes and eschew certain racist traits and prejudices to which he seems wedded.

A long time Hornblower fan, the premise behind this book drew me in. However, James Keffer should know that Captain Bush RN died in France whilst destroying enemy artillery. Thus, his presence in the book rather detracted from its credibility, even in fictional terms. That said, it was a reasonable read and bears comparison with other Napoleonic books out there. I hope he develops Commander Brewer and avoids any more mistaken Hornblower references.

A good read. I am enjoying this saga. The hero is perhaps a little inconsistently drawn but overall a good yarn. I look forward to the next book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Adds nothing to this saga, 23 Nov. 2015

I like this series but Book 11 doesn't really move things on. I hope Andrew Wareham isn't just going through the motions to generate more income from fans. He is still pandering to the ignorant in terms of Irish history and uses racist stereotypes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 20 Oct. 2015

I have enjoyed this saga but sadly Book 10 contains sloppy, racist stereotyping of the worst kind. I can only hope that Mr Wareham improves in the future.
