Harry's Last Stand: How the world my generation built is falling down, and what we can do to save it
Harry's Last Stand: How the world my generation built is falling down, and what we can do to save it
Price: £2.79

5.0 out of 5 stars Akin to The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists, 12 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This should be up there with The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists as required reading for anyone with a social conscience. An elegiac illustration of what life was like at the bottom of the pile and how things were turned around with the introduction of the Welfare State. Harry was there and he sees a similarly awful world being created today. Much of what he says echoes the words of my late father who, like Harry, grew up in the absolute poverty of pre-War, working-class Britain.

Well-written and engaging, with a sometimes circular narrative which revisits and elaborates on earlier points. I was kind of hoping that it would end with his conference-speech call to arms: "Don't let my past become your future" but my disappointment was slight indeed.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is as fine a version of the destruction of Pompeii as you will see, 21 Jan. 2016

It is a shame that this version has about four minutes cut from the broadcast version. One memorable scene, which is missing, is when the slave-girl is given a bracelet by her master. He asks her to read what it says in the inscription. Without this, the context of showing the bracelet, later, is entirely missed. Strangely, the dialogue is reprised (as it was in the broadcast version) right at the end. By then, it is too late.

Apart from the quibble about the cuts (probably done for DVD space reasons but, if so, why didn't they just drop the extras?) this is as fine a version of the destruction of Pompeii as you will see,

Sapper Martin: The Secret Great War Diary of Jack Martin
Sapper Martin: The Secret Great War Diary of Jack Martin

Edition: Diary

5.0 out of 5 stars A hidden masterpiece, 9 Nov. 2011
Why Sapper Martin did not have this diary edited and published during his lifetime is beyond me. It has all the marks of a classic. It is an eloquent, moving and honest window into the world of one of our long-forgotten heroes.

Had this been published just after the First World War, I am certain that it would now be up there alongside Sassoon and Graves.

Following Sapper Martin from his arrival in France in 1916, through the Somme and Ypres battles, on to the Italian front, then back to the Western Front for the end-game, the diary records everything from the mundane to the tragic, using often-beautiful language but with an all-pervading and disarming modesty. As far as it is possible to be, you are there with him; you know him and you like him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost excellent and I don't even play golf, 12 Jan. 2011
Warm as toast and well-made. The soles are designed to grip most slippery surfaces, even having little, rubbery spikes and, apart from on glass-smooth ice, they do.

Downsides? Well - the velcro straps are either very long or my legs are too thin. Also, they're big (but y'can tell that from the photo) ... No, I mean, they feel big. They make you feel as though you're wearing something huge, heavy and inflexible, as if your feet are about twice the size you're expecting them to be.

Does that matter? Probably not. I don't do much ballet-dancing in the snow and, if I go for a bike-ride, I wear different footwear. So, if you're thinking of getting these boots for either of those activities, forget it.

But, if you just want to splodge around in the snow and slush and not suffer from frost-nibbles to your toes, they are pretty much perfect.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brings a classic to life, 12 Jan. 2011

This review is from: Under Milk Wood [DVD] [1972] (DVD)
Well-filmed, superbly narrated film and the production values bely its age.

Occasionally jarred when certain characters didn't fit with my internal image of them but I wasn't surprised when this happened.

I can't imagine anyone but Richard Burton reading Under Milk Wood. He has a golden voice and, to me, he is now inseparable from the narrative.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brain candy but what the hell?, 12 Jan. 2011
Some of these productions are a tad dated, which is to be expected, but they are universally surprisingly good. I'm no Catherine Cookson fan (having part-read just one of her books) but, because I come from the north-east of England, they have a certain interest. Value cannot be faulted and the sound and video quality are spot-on. Nice to see the likes of Sean Bean (looking about twelve) earning his pre-stardom bread.

I've only given this collection four stars because CC's stories are invariably depressing (although usually with a slightly less-depressing ending) and, if I awarded it five stars, people would perhaps think my enjoyment of them was weird.

TP-Link TL-WN321G 54Mbps 11g Wireless LAN Adapter Dongle
TP-Link TL-WN321G 54Mbps 11g Wireless LAN Adapter Dongle

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty little thing that really works, 12 Jan. 2011
What can you say about a WiFi dongle? Not a lot, but the important stuff is that it works - good sensitivity and excellent speed. Absolute doddle to set up and it's quite stylish too. Replaces a dongle which didn't much like going through a full wash cycle (although watching it bounce around in the machine was quite entertaining).

Excellent bit of kit. Amazingly light and a pleasure to read from. Perfect for single-hand operation and the capacity of 3,500 books (or thereabouts) should keep me going for a few weeks.

I'm using it in conjunction with a neat bit of software called Calibre (which is free and available for Windows and Linux). Cook a "recipe" with a few clicks and schedule Calibre to pick up the news and deliver it, automatically, to your Kindle. Superb.

Tiny. Works well (works better than the now-defunct on-board wireless in the laptop ever did). What more can one say? Arrived quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for audio books, 12 Jan. 2011
Bought this for my mother, who is getting on a bit and can't handle fiddly, new technology. After a brief instruction lesson, she was off and listening to audio books. She thinks it's excellent. Good sound, dead easy to operate and looks pretty good too.
