4.0 out of 5 stars Fruity floral oriental, 13 Feb. 2015
In the initial burst the gorgeous pink guava blends beautifully with the florals of the angelica blossom, and underneath it all the woody notes and sheer musk give the fragrance a smooth, creamy, rich feel. It’s like a burst of the exotic grounded by sensual musk. I like this scent a lot in the initial stages. After an hour the scent has mellowed and become smoother, the guava still in evidence but the musk even more prominent, and just a hint of honey.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty fragrance, 13 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In the initial burst the fruity top notes of this fragrance combine with the floral heart notes to create a scent that is both fresh and yet softly beautiful. The orange provides just a hint of juiciness, but it’s tempered by the milder notes of peach, coconut, and karo karounde. The freesias and roses create the soft floral bed, but the predominant floral note is the shy and yet enchanting violets. After almost an hour the fragrance has melted into the musky base notes, creating a blend of creamy delicious vanilla and powdery sensual amber, musk, and sandalwood. The fruity top notes have completely faded by this time, but the violet remains in a powdery form, as does a soft jasmine. All in all, this is a pretty scent, although it’s not amongst my favourites. It’s pretty rather than beautiful, a polite and demure floral oriental rather than a sophisticated and sensual outright oriental.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great scent, 13 Feb. 2015

Makes a great gift; a nice blend of lavender with herbal, green notes and sea water, with a solid finish of sandalwood and tobacco. Has a really sunny, uplifting feel to it. Must admit I'm tempted to borrow this myself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic aldehydes and incense, 13 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I’m immediately hit by the aldehydes in this one. The use of aldehydes really mark Youth Dew out as a traditional, classic perfume of the early 20th century, though the aldehydes are tempered into powderiness by soft lavender, ylang ylang, and the musk and incense base notes. And like most of these old, aldehyde infused perfumes, it lasts a long time. The notes don’t really change too much – the aldehydes soften and let the musk, incense, and amber come more to the fore – but over six hours later and whilst the pungency has faded somewhat, it is still definitely detectable. Whilst an oriental, it’s in the old, traditional model of smoky incense and oodles of aldehydes, works well as a classic, timeless fragrance but lacks the floral notes of modern orientals. But a lovely scent nonetheless, and good staying power.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sunny scent, 13 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In the initial burst the lemon, rosewood, orange blossom, rose, jasmine, and sandalwood all blend together in a timeless, classic fragrance that smells of oriental incense with a zesty top of citruses. This fragrance is advertised as a fruity floral, but on me it comes off as mainly an oriental with hints of fruits and florals. It definitely hearkens back to an earlier time – this takes me back to my childhood and something my grandmother and possibly my mother might wear. After a few hours the scent is still reasonably strong, despite a certain amount of fading. The citrus notes are the ones that have faded most. Although it’s an oriental, it’s more of a soft, floral oriental than a pure oriental, and the citrus notes give it a fresh brightness that make it more of a sunny fragrance than the soft orientals I’m used to. But a lovely fragrance nonetheless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fresh and soft, 13 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The initial burst is dominated by fresh melon, with the barest hint of ginger, combining fresh fruitiness with warm spices. However, after fifteen minutes it quickly evolves into a fruity floral blend, with the melon becoming mellow and the orange blossom and lily of the valley starting to swirl into the aroma in something much softer and fluffier. After just under two hours the amber and white chocolate really comes through, though the sillage isn’t great, creating a blend that is both delicious foody and sensual oriental. It’s not quite as strong as I would hope, but all in all a lovely scent that I’m happy to wear, and would suit both evening and daytime.

4.0 out of 5 stars Far Away Bella, 13 Feb. 2015
The initial burst is fruity, but not in the way that this perfume’s sister brand, Far Away Exotic is. The fruits here, instead of being exotic, are a blend of citrus, including clementine notes, and hints of apple as well, with floral heart notes definitely underlying the whole composition. There is perhaps a hint of forest berries amongst the top notes as well, possibly blackberries. The tart yet sweet fruity opening quickly transforms into something a bit warmer, in under half an hour, and then the creamy tonka bean base note comes through, with a dash of vanilla and a sprinkling of cinnamon. I’m reminded just a little of an apple crumble with notes of magnolia and roses. After several hours it’s detectable only on the skin as a creamy apple crumble blur. I think this is my least favourite of the Far Away scents. It’s pleasant enough, but I’ve experienced the apple and berries top notes far too often, and the heart and base notes don’t distinguish it enough from other similar perfumes. I would wear it again, but it’s not my favourite.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love it or loathe it, 13 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Angel has a real clash of notes that just launch an absolute assault on my sense of aroma. The opening is a discordant blend of truly pungent green and herbal bergamot, with juicy dripping melon and mandarin, and dropped into a large, sticky vat of thick caramel, bitter dark chocolate, and sharp patchouli. Add a spoonful of rich, viscous honey, and stir. My nose isn’t sure whether this combination is absolutely genius or loathsome. All the rich chocolate, caramel and honey is almost too much, it comes across as almost too saccharine, but then it’s thrown together with the pungent bitterness of patchouli and bergamot. A couple of hours down the line and the potency of the opening blend of notes fades. That bitter dark chocolate and patchouli as not quite so strong, and also the caramel and honey is softer; now it’s sweet, not saccharine. The floral notes come in and temper all those pungent opening notes, together with forest berries and creamy vanilla base notes. Angel is much more palatable to me one hour in. Rather than a floral oriental, I would describe it as a foody, spicy oriental. Not what I usually go for in my orientals – I do prefer orientals that combine florals and musks – but still pretty nice, actually. I definitely like the dry down after an hour has passed, but that initial pungent, discordant clash of notes is not exactly to my tastes. I think this is definitely a love it or loathe it perfume, but I'm leaning towards love it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, but not enough staying power, 13 Feb. 2015
In the initial burst I am immediately struck by fresh green and floral notes, the magnolia definitely coming through more than the fruity top notes. After several minutes though the fruity top notes begin to come through, pear and mandarin, but no blackcurrants. After more than an hour the cherry blossom rises to the top, underlaid very subtly by amber and musk, but unfortunately the scent fades very fast. Disappointed with the staying power of this one, and whilst a pleasant perfume it in no way stands out, for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not to my tastes, 13 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The opening notes hit you with a blast of freesia, but not light and airy freesias, rather rich and surprisingly heavy freesias, mixed as they are with rich roses and juicy peach and pineapple. I’m not too sure it goes together that well, but it’s not overtly unpleasant. After a couple of hours the fragrance really softens, with the orris root, narcissus, and carnation really dominating, and just a hint of musky cedar and sandalwood. It comes across as altogether far more pleasant on the dry down to me than on the initial burst. It just seems wrong to drag down the light and airy freesias with those heavier, richer notes – for me the whole delight of freesias is their light and bright scent. As a whole, the scent is pleasant, but I just can’t like it, and it’s not for me. Although the dry down is softer and more airy, it’s too clashing and heavy in the opening for my liking.
