The Bird Book
The Bird Book
by Rob Hume
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Get into birds, 20 Feb. 2016
This review is from: The Bird Book (Paperback)
This is the only bird book I have found that is actually a joy to read. The brief descriptions have interesting observations and facts. Unlike a standard field guide, you could actually sit and read this from start to finish.

This book is suitable for people of all abilities, but particularly those that want to build on basic knowledge.

So good. Small size. Big sound. USB charged.

Everyone is amazed that the sound is actually coming from this thing - it actually provides real bass and crisp treble.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm... needs more dog, 18 May 2011
This is such a practical book - organised by season and giving genuinely workable recipes for wild ingredients. This is no Bear Grylls style advice about how best to swallow a live frog.

The photos are clearly from the original 1970s version of the book, with peculiar serving suggestions, but they add to the charm. It's worth noting that the book wont help you with identifying wild foods and you will need separate guides for this purpose (or risk poisoning!). Roger Phillips own mushroom ID book is the best available and well worth gettingMushrooms

Even if you only cook a few things from this book, it's a fascinating read and you'll never look at the hedgerow in the same way again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and practical, 18 May 2011
This is the perfect source book if you are considering decorating in a mid-century style. The photos provide inspiration, but allow you to take bits from each house on display. The accompanying text is incredibly knowledgeable, really describing where each look came from and how it is achieved.

Despite being more of a history book, this has helped me to create exactly the room I always wanted and helped me to understand what I was trying to achieve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why aren't they on TV?, 18 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In the 80s and 90s these were on TV every day - sandwiched between sport events or introduced by the mighty Rolf. These cartoons were Oscar winners, up there with the best of Tom & Jerry. But now..... you can't see them anywhere on TV. I'm guessing the frequent beatings the characters take are considered a bit much by today's standard - in fairness, watching them now it is sometimes surprising to see the hilarious brutality.

Thankfully these shorts are now available on these incredible (and cheap) collections. All the classic episodes are here, but some of the stranger shorts I don't recall seeing, so it's a real treasure trove. I just watched an early road runner episode and laughed as much as I did back in the 80s when I first saw it.

In addition, the extras are genuinely interesting, with fascinating early cartoons and interviews with all the surviving creators. I'm rationing myself to 2 episodes a day to make them last and protect my sanity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Is it me or is it a bit dull?, 18 May 2011
This review is from: Helplessness Blues (MP3 Download)
I've really tried to get into this album, but it has nothing like the personality of the first one. The whole thing sounds like a well written, beautifully sung, disgruntled sigh.

There are no memorable tunes, with one song seeming to run into the next - the omnipresent harmonies not helping to distinguish the songs from each other. Lyrically there are some real moments that make me cringe: "ruffled the fur of the collie 'neath the table" being one example that makes my toes curl.

The fleet foxes certainly make a pleasant sound, but this release is simply crushingly dull. Good background music but not much else.

TKC Aerobie Pro 13 Inch Flying Ring "Colours May Vary"
TKC Aerobie Pro 13 Inch Flying Ring "Colours May Vary"
Price: £9.33

5.0 out of 5 stars Find a wide flat space!, 18 May 2011
These really are as good as everyone says - the Aerobie is the only true alternative to the classic Wham-o frisbee. However a game of aerobie is very different to traditional frisbee - these things fly for miles.

It's also worth noting that they are a bit trickier to throw - it's very easy to send them flying off into nearby fields. Read the instructions and make sure you get the grip and throwing angle right. I would suggest making sure you have a wide open space of at least a hundred meters either side of you before you start. I must have lost four or five of these things over the years!

Durable, cheap, well designed, and most of all ridiculously good fun. Buy one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Vinyl is the future!, 18 May 2011
The vinyl version of this album is a thing of beauty - two heavyweight discs a brilliantly illustrated book, a CD copy of the album and a poster of the band in their ridiculous centurion outfits. For this price you are getting a huge amount of stuff.

The album itself is, I feel, a step up from the previous Grinderman album. It sits somewhere between the raw noise of the first album and the Bad Seed's 'Dig Lazarus Dig'. It's certainly more melodic than the first with moments like Palaces of Montezuma sounding far more like a beautiful Bad Seeds track. The lyrics dwell on sexual longing and desperation as with the first album, but there are more abstract songs present too.

As with the first album there are moments when you will laugh out loud (particularly on the filthy 'kitchenette'). Punchlines are delivered in inimitable style by Cave; apparently he is like the loch ness monster "two great big humps and then I'm gone".

I think this album offers everything that a long term Nick Cave fan could want, with references to early Birthday Party work and to the later more sensitive albums with the Bad Seeds. Crucially I also believe that if this album was released by a new young band it would be heralded as an incredible debut. Pretty impressive after all these years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delboy, 17 May 2011
This review is from: Gob (Audio CD)
I haven't had such a strong response to a UK hiphop album since Roots Manuva's first record. The thing that marks this out from all other releases is the incredible experimental production - with a totally unique sound on every track. Some of the bleeping beats took me right back to the 80s days of the Commodore 64.

Dels' flow is superb and perfectly matches the rolling beats. The lyrics are thoughtful, funny, and reference a life that we can all understand. It's a good sign that guest spots from Ghostpoet and Roots himself do not overshadow Del, but simply add to the richness of the album.

I genuinely feel that I'll be listening to this album 10 years from now and still hearing new things. If you like electro, hiphop, poetry, or just good tunes I can't recommend this enough.

1.0 out of 5 stars Diary entry: Day 9, 11 Sept. 2008
Day 9.... still no fish. If I stare at the tank and go cross-eyed sometimes I can see shapes moving. But I know it's my mind playing tricks. Ten pounds for this torment.
