5.0 out of 5 stars Modern soul at its best., 13 Oct 2008
Blackpool Mecca was at the cutting edge of Northern soul music and with this compilation you will see why.
Instead of filling the gaps with inane, obscure pop music to keep the dance floor filled like other clubs, messrs Levine & Curtis led the way playing fresh modern soul music that others refused to play.
For a taste of the mecca(If you never got to go) This is a good CD and you will get to hear just a fraction what the mecca was playing in its hey day.....Modern soul before the phrase was widely used as it is today, From the No1 club at that time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, 13 Oct 2008
For the collector 7" Vinyl is the cornerstone for most people however these "After hours" compilations are great value and should not be ignored featuring some of the greatest tunes to emerge from the northern soul scene are featured on these compilations and along with them some of the most obscure unknowns. All in all a worthwhile comp if northern soul is your bag.

Nice album this......If you are into the old jazz/funk this is an album for you.....Many good tracks, the stand out one for me is "cuppa chino"...a vibrant dance track that always gets a good response from the dancefloor in the clubs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice surprise, 8 Oct 2008
You know when you look at a playlist and do not know one single track listed?? Well thats what happened to me when I picked up this cd....Umming & Arring I went for it and woah!! Love it....its filled with some real quality soul & funk jazz that is mainly out of france (in english) but a nice surprise and you will not be dissapointed with this one.first three tracks - funk jazz, track 4 the flow, nice bit of urban soul, sounding a little like Light of the world, Track 5 a nice bit of jazz with an opening from Lonnie smiths funk reaction!!
As the label will tell you "Free your mind - Move your body - stomp your feet" You will do just that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Manchester soul, 8 Oct 2008
Lovely mid tempo soul from the 1990s manchester goup fronted by Lorna bailey, a smooth silky voice with floating backing with a catchy hook.
Containing some of the members from the 80s band 52nd street, this is a refreshing band that has other tracks that are of good quality too but for some reason never released a cd.
For a sound check to convince you, check out you tube for a listen to this track, then you will come back and buy!

2.0 out of 5 stars Dont Bother!, 8 Oct 2008
I already knew the Al foster, sam most, Joe Bataan tracks and was not expecting a cross section from the 1930s to 1960s of obscure tunes from big bands.
Im 54 years old and I thought it was more suited to somebody Like my father who would have been 80 now, he would have liked it,
I would like to know how many albums have sold? Is there a demand for this stuff? It cant be many and probably bought for the same reason as me - by mistake.

4.0 out of 5 stars New yorks finest, 31 Jan 2008
During the Big Disco era Crown Heights affair were the consistant performers over & over again with what must be the most chart singles on one album, with no less than 6 of the 12" versions of some of there best singles, 27 tracks in all and what tracks they are!
There is one big tune missing from this album and that is one of there first tunes called "Streaking". I think "streaking" was the the kick start to go onto producing hit after hit during their great 70S popularity.
If you were out & about clubbing at that time as I was, This is an essential album to add to your collection for the memories of the disco era, there cant be a better album for value for money.
