This is an excellent yoga DVD - the 20 minute programmes give a lot of flexibility as some flows are relaxing and some stimulating so there is a lot of choice. The matrix is extremely useful and easy to use. I especially like the background music which I find unobtrusive but sets the mood.

This is an excellent book covering a neglected topic - the contribution made by women to winning the Second World War. Not all of the women whose stories are told in the book had the time of their lives at BP and for some of them it was the most amazing chance to do something more than they had dared hope, but in any case their stories are absorbing and inspiring. An excellent read.

Another fascinating offering from TSF for those interested in 'backstage' aspects of the beautiful game. Probably a bit disappointing if you're looking for laddishness - TSF is a lot more thoughtful and well informed on a wide variety of topics than that.

I'm was struggling with this book, and I had seriously hoped that it would be funny and possibly insightful. The first couple of chapters deal (again) with the teenage compulsive masturbator (really, Caitlin?). Yet again (yawn) we hear about the Caitlin figure's compulsive masturbation as a 14 year-old and I'm afraid I'm still having trouble believing that this really happened rather than being a good story form Caitlin's later years in London, probably told to turn the guys on and dramatise herself. It's the same old set of circumstances - brought up on a council estate (big deal - lots of people are), father a waster, mother put-upon etc. This section of the book could do with some serious editing.

However - the remainder of the book is fresh and fun with some excellent passages (her reflections on cynicysm are very quotable)and bear the authentic mark of someone who did a lot of their growing-up in public and had cause to consider the consequences of their actions too late to undo the damage.

Fanny and Stella: The Young Men Who Shocked Victorian England
Fanny and Stella: The Young Men Who Shocked Victorian England

5.0 out of 5 stars An eye-opener, 26 Jun. 2014

This book is an account not only of Fanny and Stella but the times they lived in. Trans-sexual people have a pretty hard time of it today but their era was massively worse, as it was for all people who loved their own sex rather than the opposite one. Despite the prevalence of very passionate friendships between men (which was OK) the physical expression of that passion was beyond the pale, especially following some swingeing legislation that made love between men illegal (although the gals got away with it because Queen Victoria couldn't believe women would do anything that filthy - ha!).

McKenna's account of the police conspiracy to secure their prosecution (hopefully for sodomy, which would have been a virtual death sentence by hard labour) was exposed at the trial, as was the collusion of the police surgeon. This is a gripping read, sympathetically written. The narrative goes at a cracking pace and depicts the loyal, steady Fanny and the diva Stella with tenderness and great empathy. A must read.

Joseph Boyden's writing is spare but richly descriptive - this short story moves on the story of the Bird family but also stands alone as a fine piece of writing.
