5.0 out of 5 stars The image image is amazingly good. The opening sequence--revealing a silent film being produced ..., 2 Jun. 2016
What a gem! I had never heard of this Asquith film until it was released by the BFI on this blu-ray dual format edition. The image image is amazingly good. The opening sequence--revealing a silent film being produced on a set-is remarkably inventive, including a long crane sot moving from one set to another where an entirely different film is being made. The major assets of this release is the score. It is a modern version of a classical silent film score In some sequences there is only a single pianobein recorded, but at others,, a full orchestra plays, with the music shifting gracefully between them just as the music shifts from one genre to another with equal grace. If you like films about the making of films, if you like Asquith if you like silent film, I highly recommend this film to you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good cast can't save this mediocre tear-jerker, 5 Aug. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having read the novel by Irene Nemorofsky and seeing the cast of the film, I was looking forward to watching it. Both my wife and I were too bored to finish watching past the first 70 minutes. The film is not well-directed. There were two beautiful shots, one a close up and another a landscape in long shot. But the rest seem very formulaic, like a TV show. And the plot just seems silly. It recalls Le Corbeau, but is nowhere near as good. This film is like a romance novel (a particularly bad one). It is not The Night Porter. Nor does it come close to films like Malle's Lacombe Lucien or Au Revoir, Mes Infants. Given that Nemorofsky died in Auschwitz, it seems rather shocking that there are almost no mention of Jews. The few times Jews are mentioned have nothing to due with the Nazis.

1.0 out of 5 stars So boring I could watch even one episode, 21 Dec. 2013

This review is from: Spiral - Series 1-3 [DVD] (DVD)
Compared to series like The Bridge and The Killing, or even Hannibal, or the excellent Broadchurch, this series is a non-starter procedural. I got it based on a recommendation in a New Yorker article. Big Mistake. The same article did recommend a truly great French TV series The Returned - Series 1 [DVD] The french series Braquo Season 1 & 2 [DVD] is at least watchable.

My review won't really be helpful. I just wanted to say that my wife and I loved this film. Vinterberg has made fantastic srtides since he directed Celebration. The Hunt may be the best film made by a Dogme director. The blu-ray transfer is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A one of kind art film that deserves to be seen, 31 Aug. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I watched the BFI Blu-ray edition of Herostratus (1967) last night
after having seen it only once before in a class I took as a freshman
in 1972 at U.C. Berkeley. The essays in the BFI booklet largely try
to defend Herostratus against the charge it is pretentious or praise
it for what it managed to do on such a small budget. I recommend the
film very highly even though I think it is fair to say that the acting
is often bad (either because bad actors were cast or because good
actors got bad direction), the editing generally poor (which is really
surprising because Levy, the director had worked as an editor for
twenty years), and the cinematography generally mediocre (there are
some stunning long shots). The film does not hold up very well when
measured against contemporaneous art films such as Antonioni's Blow Up
(1966) or Roeg's Performance (1970). Initially, Herostratus even
seemed a bit crude to me. But I stayed with it and saw that the film
really does have a very sophisticated narrative / editing structure
which builds up gradually and really takes off for the last third of
he film. One of the most interesting things Levy does is use
cross-cut editing first in a rather crude way (a couple have sex while
dead cows are butchered so that seemingly loving sex here equals a
meat market) but then returns to the sex scene and cross cuts it
differently. Some very briefly held shots recur and are gradually
juxtaposed and then superimposed to unfold a theme about love and
fame. There are some really interesting use of stills when the hero
is made to look like a Francis Bacon portrait (just recently saw the
Bacon show at MOMA in NYC). One can see the influence of the film on
Children of Men and 28 Days Later. So I found the film rather moving
in the end, and was saddened to read that both the director and lead
actor committed suicide. But I can see why it fell off the map, and I
can also see why I bought it after seeing it only once 37 years ago.
It is one of a kind, both cruder and more sophisticated than
contemporaneous art films. Even its BFI defenders don't really seem
to get Herostratus. (By the way, both discs played on my region Sony
player).

1.0 out of 5 stars DVD IS NOT WIDESCREEN!, 13 Aug. 2008
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Jude [DVD] [1996] (DVD)
This great film receives a major injustice from its DVD transfer. Unlike the U.S widescreen DVD release (out of print, sadly), this UK DVD is not widescreen but "full frame". Since the pan and scan full frame aspect ratio of DVD is not mentioned on the webpage, I assumed this DVD was widescreen. So approximately one third of the screen image is cropped throughout the DVD. What a rip off.

I LOVE THE FILM AND HATE THIS DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD edition of a wonderful series, 21 Dec. 2005
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
First, the series is complete and uncensored in this DVD collection. Second, the sound quality is excellent. The only problem with the DVD is that each disc is in a cardboard slip that makes it dfficult to get the disc out. You have to grab it and hence smudge it a bit as you take it out. But this DVD is well worth getting. I saw the series when it aired in the U.S. in 1976 and was amazed at how well it still holds up, from the opening sequence with the slithering snake on. Derek Jacobi and John Hurt turn in excellent performances and the screenplay adaptation fo Robert Grave's novel is superb. I ordered this DVD edition after reading that the U.S. DVD edition is horrible (poor sound, poor image qulaity, and censored episodes). I'm glad I did.
