2.0 out of 5 stars Dated, But Effective Thriller, 28 Mar 2013

George Sanders is excellent as a Nazi officer who captures Thorndyke (played by a somewhat miscast Walter Pidgeon)and tries to get him to confess to an attempted assassination of Hitler. Thorndyke eacapes to England, with the aid of a young cabin boy (played by Roddy McDowell.) There he meets Joan Bennett. She has the most appalling accent.

The last half an hour is the best of all, when Thorndyke appears to be trapped in a cave.

Not a bad movie, directed by Fritz Lang. It might have been better with someone like Ronald Colman in the Pidgeon role.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Well-Made Scary Film, 28 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Sinister [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
So many films nowadays deliver movies with unoriginal content, that just have a lot of deaths, screams and bumps. This one has a great plot that draws the viewer in, with facts being given every so often.

Ethan Hawke plays a burnt-out true crime writer. He moves his family into a home where mass killings took place earlier. However, he fails to tell his wife and children this vital fact. When he looks in the attic he finds a projector, plus home movies that had been left there before. What he sees unnerves him.

Sinister is quite a slow burner of a film. It does take time for certain things to happen, but there are a few grisly incidents early on, noises and shocks. The effective camerawork heightens the tension throughout.

The movie is very atmospheric. A great one to watch in the middle of the night on your own with the lights off.

I can see this possibly having a sequel or even a prequel, in the way Paranormal Activity did. I hope they don't do this, as the movie is fine on it's own. The viewer is better left to figure out what will happen next.

A Sleeping Life: (A Wexford Case)
A Sleeping Life: (A Wexford Case)
by Ruth Rendell
Edition: Paperback
Price: 7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Wexford Novel, 24 Mar 2013
I've read quite a few Wexford novels, and found 'A Sleeping Life' to be my favourite.

Clues are given to the reader as to the death of Rhoda Comfrey, so we can solve the case along with Reg Wexford, one of literature's most solid and dependable characters.

This is one of the few novels I was able to solve, albeit just a couple of pafes earlier than Wexford!

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Book Ever, 24 Mar 2013
As a reader of all Cornwell's Scarpetta novels up to this point, it's clear that this is the one where the author went completely off the rails.

Beside her appalling decision to write in third person, the regular characters behave completely differently to how they usually are, especially Lucy.

I read right through to the end, waiting for it to improve. It never did, but a twist ending is just rushed through in the last few pages, bringing to life a character who has been dead for many books before.

As another reviewer said, if Cornwell had submitted this as her first novel, it would never have seen the light of day. The whole feeling of the book is that Cornwell is tired of Scarpetta and wanted to try something different with her. She might as well have phoned it through to her publisher.

I read this some years ago, but decided to add my review. I have never read a Cornwell novel since then, and would give this a no-star if I could.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Return To Form For Bond, 24 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My favoutite Bond film always was 'You Only Live Twice', followed closely by 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'. Since then, I tolerated the cartoon Roger Moore ones with increasing disdain until I abandonded them altogether. It was only with the superb reviews that I knew I had to see what the fuss was about.

What a difference everything is in the hands of the right actors and director. Bond is now firmly in the 21st century. No ridiculous gadgets like exploding pens, as Q tells Bond. The equipment is modern advanced hardware, but all available now.

Daniel Craig is a brutal Bond who lives up to his designation as a 00 listed agent. Judi Dench is given a lot more to do in this film, and is refreshing to see her as the woman to be rescued, cutting down on the usual amount of Bond girls in a movie.

The villian is particularly warped, one of the best since Ernst Stavros Blofeld.

I could tell there were snatches of '24' in it, especially in the London sequences. If 24 were turned into a movie, action sections like that would look very near.

Sam Mendes did a fantastic job in revitalising a character that for me had seemed a little past his time in this day and age. Well done on bringing Bond up to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Timeless, 10 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Though bought as a present for my father, I was just as keen to see this timeless production. When I started two view it, I noticed two things that made it stand out from many of the inferior dramas nowadays.

Firstly, there was no music in the background that gets tend to be inserted to overdramatise a moment. We can see for ourselves how things are. It almost seems as if we are eavesdropping on the people that are talking.

Secondly, there are the remarkably long takes between scenes. The experienced and talented actors such as Kenneth More, Nyree Dawn Porter, Eric Porter and Susan Hampshire can play long scenes without constant changes of camera angles.

Though some many may be put off by it being filmed in black and white, they shouldn't be. It adds to the sense of occasion that it is far in the past. In the episode 'Birth of a Forsyte', it incorporates easily actual footage of Queen Victoria's funeral.

For anyone contemplating whether to buy this or the more recent version, there is no contest. This goes into incredible depth with the storylines and tells everything in full. The other glosses over or ignores so much.

A real bargain for any lover of quality drama.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stylish Danish Drama, 10 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Borgen - Series 2 [DVD] (DVD)
Sidse Babett Knudson is ideal as the Danish Prime Minister Birgitte Nyborg. Who would have thought that a drama about a coalition government would be so rivetting? All the characters are so realistic, we begin to associate with all their problems. Birgitte has problems in her role as PM, and also at home with her daughter Laura, who is developing problems. Even the very minor characters show up as important in making the wheels of the stories go round well.

Quite unmissable. Drama at it's very, very best.

The stark black and white images show the capital up in vivid detail. They are of a London that no longer exists, but was not that long ago. Many are in the 1950's but even more recent ones appear to be part of a lost world.

Some excellent humour in here that has kept me smiling. It's well worth the purchase for those who like sharp American humour, as I do.
